A friend is going to rebuld his 98GT engine and wants to know will the Cobra aluminum block work with PI heads. If so whats the bebefit of him going to a aluminum block. Any GT's with a aluminum block please tell me your experiences

I have one in my car. The advantage is the 80 pounds weight savings. I'm not aware of any disadvantages, if there are any. It will help your car do this:

The only disadvantage I can think of is additional heat under hood, because of how quickly aluminum transfers it in comparison to iron. I mean....mod motors already have aluminum heads, but with the block, there's that much more of it to conduct the heat.

Yea, I don't know anything about heat transfer. I sure can't tell any difference and the piss poor temp guage rides in exactly the same place. I drove my car 15 hours one day two weeks ago with no problems except for the fuel pump heating the gasoline, but that is common with my fuel system setup.

I wouldn't think it would make itself really apparent until one started performing a lot of stop and go traffic on a really warm day. The aluminum transfers the heat out of the engine quickly, which is a good think since it will allow for more timing in the tune, but I'd feel bad for anyone running an open element filter tucked anywhere in the engine bay on a day like that. I suppose if one were to stick with some sort of inner fender induction with a composite or some other lesser conducting intake pipe, the air charge would be fine, but otherwise, I can't see it not being "spoiled" by the excess heat.

I though I remembered reading that this was one of the reasons that Ford chose not to stick with the aluminum block on the ’03-’04 Cobra. For worries of soaking the already prone to heat Eaton blower?

You know, that's an interesting point. I am switching from a Novi 2000 to a KB 2.2 next week. I'll be interested to see if I develop any heat related problems.

An additional coolant bypass was added later on. I remember the earlier '96-'98 Cars having cooling issues and a few updates needed to be made.

....but that's not what we're referring too. It's the under the hood "exterior" temperatures that rise, not the internal temps so much. The only thing that the "exterior" temps might affect is the incoming air charge, which if not dealt with properly, could cause a loss in horsepower. That’s why under hood turbo cars suffer from heat soak in stop and go traffic and performance is affected.

I suggest upgrading the oil pickup with the oil pump, the cobra's are larger. I'm suprized that wasn't on the corral thread

brain - it was 96 when they had coolant problems, i think it was a simple fix of the water pump :D

there is another thread going on on corral about the explorer aluminum block, it discusses the cobra oil pump and pickup but i didn't feel like finding it.
