The PO of my 66 coupe (289 C code V8), had the coil mounted on the passenger side inner fender – this makes for a long HT lead, and I want to locate it in the correct position on the engine. I believe this should be on the inlet manifold, drivers side, between the valve cover and the distributor.

1) Is that correct?
2) I must have the wrong bracket, as I can’t find any holes that will allow me to fit the coil – has anyone got pictures of how it should be done?

Thats a typical FE location, although Ive seen some 289s have it there also.

Another common location is on the engine front, with the bracket bolted to the head. Thats where mine is.

My 65 coupe is mounted in the same place as Lman's. Preferably your coil should be mounted in an upright position away from too much direct engine heat.

This is kind of a "Catch 22" situation here. The correct place for the coil was bolted to the passenger side head, based on the few pics I can find. But that's not the best place for it's proper functioning. Conversely, the longer the coil wire is, the more resistance it's got. Best place for a coil is as close to the distributor cap as possible in as cool a spot as you can put it. The hotter a coil is, the less effective it is.

Vibration is a bit of a no-no for coils too - I always wondered why they were fitted to the engine. I'll go for the front of the head - it's kinda in the airflow there...

Thanks guys.

You can see mine on the front of the head. The proper bracket keeps it 3/4" away from contact with the head, so it seems to stay relatively cool. It is also cooled by the fan.

Honest, I'm not just trying to post this picture of my home made cleaner as many times as possible.

Home made cleaner you say? Do tell us more...

Thanks for the pic, it shows me just what I need - I guess it mounts to the hole that is used by the dipstick on the other head?
