Hey everyone,

I was at my local speed shop(http://www.gofastfords.com) getting a new quote on my 4.10 gear and ds install. WOOO HOOO $850 for the gears, oil, ds, and labor :) they are going in next week. :D :D

Anyway as you see in my sig I want to add new the Comp Cam grind xe270(Stage II) and springs to the stang. I have a 2002 GT. I was discussing the necessary ECU flashing for the new cams to the get the idle straight and the tuner at the shop asked me about my cam choice. He cautioned me about the possibility of valves contacting the piston due the "rather" long duration of the cams(270/274 234/238). He told be he has seen 2 cars in the Charlotte-Concord area that have had valve noise and upon tear down they have found where the valves have put small little doghnuts(half- circles) on the top of piston from the valves.

I believe in some other threads it was proposed that some of the people who had wierd noises after the cam install should check for valve to piston contact. I think everyone kinda dismissed this idea. Anyways I'm still going to install the cams, I'm just going to get a bore scope and pull the plugs after the install and break in to make sure I'm not getting any contact.

So does anyone have a 2002 GT with a Romeo (11 bolts in valve cover) with the Comp Cams or a cam of similiar duration. 270/270.. 234/238 @ .050 with .550 lift. I'm looking for comments on valve train noise after the install?? or any other issues.

thanks

$850 for a gear install??? Summit sells the Ford racing aluminum DS for $174-they gotta pull the DS anyways-so no added labor there. $675 for gears sounds like waaaay too much to me. I paid $425 gears and install.

ModularDepot.com is your friend :) 95% of the info that I picked up about my cam install came from there. The guys are really friendly and you will get more help there on topics like this. What I can tell you is that Comp uses a slightly different manner to get their numbers for their cams. All I remember is something about they take the measurements at the valve and it makes their numbers look more radical than they really are. So a cam (or cams in our case) from Comp Cams with 234/238 @.050 isn't as stout as a Lunati, Crower, Crane, or other with 234/238 duration.

BTW, I've already told you, but you will love those cams. Great power and they sound wicked at idle. Let us know how the install turns out!

Damn thats steep as hell man! CPrace here in charlotte is going to do my cams for 350. You should call them and get a quote. They can probably do the rear end for A LOT less than that.

Is that just for cams? If it is for cams and springs, I would get that in writing before they started working on the car.

I have the Xe270Ah's. PTV contact was not an issue with mine. But since your running a cam with .550 lift your going to need their springs too, or you may run into trouble. and springs are the hard part.

Jeffery did you do the springs too?? with the 270's??

Damn 4.6... Did you see that thread about T&J's cams? They look pretty sick. Coming from one black mustang GT owner in charlotte to another-you might want to look into those. Would you happen to be going to Hot Import Nights tonight? Or going to CPrace afterwards (domestics will be there). Keep us posted on the cams, because that will be my next big mod over the summer.

Drk Mrk,

Wheres everyone meeting tonight?? I was going to Hickory to meet up with the Extereme Mustangs guys at Arby's in Hickory last night but it rained. I'll take a peek at those other cams. I'm really learning toward the Comp 270 grind. Cause although its only a Stage II grind...its right at the limits of duration for a stock piston/head combo. As you have noticed some people have had valve to piston contact cause the duration is right at the limits. I'm hoping to be a lucky one have no contact. I'll going to have to take great pains to make sure I dont break anything.

Yea yea. I personally am leaning towards the VT stage ones... Because I don't want to change out the valve springs. CPrace. Every Saturday night. The cops can't kick anyone out. All kinds of cars go there. www.cprace.com for some directions if you want to go. We plan on meeting after Hot Import Nights (yea yea... domestic guy going to a rice show). So probably around 12:30-1
