Completed rear seat delete kit. homemade

well, I got it done. came out really nice if I do say so myself.
I decided not to cut holes at the spare tire nor up front. The front half of he lower part is secured to the "lid" and the right side is removable to gain access to an amp I have bolted down there. The amp in the pic is now gone, made way for a larger one. Works great and it fit perfectly.

I've taken the back seats out before, and they're mostly just foam and weigh very little. Wouldn't a rear seat delete made out of wood actually weigh more? That being said, it looks extremely clean and that's a job well done. It looks a lot like the one here...

I was thinking that too. but, it's not always about saving weight, A decision to put a set of subs and amps back there almost always guarantees that saving weight wasn't the first priority.

the bottoms are light. the tops with the hinges and all that on the other hand arent the lightest thing out there. i can see using something like 1/4" board for it and cutting weight

I really don't see the purpose of a rear seat delete. Granted yours looks great, but what does it achieve besides only being able to have one passenger?

To me a rear seat delete is when you look into the back of the interior and you see the floor or carpet on the floor, not a wooden box in place of the seats. But, it does look great. Personally, i have 2 kids so this is not an option for me. I'm actually thinking about seeing if i can mount two racing seats in the back without making it look stupid.

That would be genius. Maybe they make child sized seats.

looks good man, I just ordered a rear seat delete kit a few days ago from http://rearseatdelete.com/mustang87-93_hatchback.html , I think it weighs less than the stangmods kit since they use thick plastic instead of wood. I dont have the patience to make one, much props !

The plastic racing seats would be perfect though because they're usually smaller than most other seats, and i think i could even modify them a little and hide what i do with seat covers. It'd be a little fab work, but you could weld seat tracks into the rear floor pan and go that route. Either way I'd love to see it happen.

I like it but I would have done 2 things different
1st, put the battery box in the spare well and make a hidden access door so you can get to your battery
2nd, if you're insistent on running subs, id mount them flush into the delete kit and make some air tight space under there somewhere so your subs sound and look nice....get rid of that big 1990's sub box....it would clean the entire space up.

guys, sorry about the super late reply here... my edelbrock heads turned up with broken valve springs and the car was down since November... anyway, thank you for the positive feedback and advice! I used a 1/4" fiber board from home depot, made two templates out of cardboard, and went to town on the board with a jigsaw. Covered it with carpet rolls from Oreillys, and attached it with upholstery nails.
I made a backseat delete ONLY because the bottom seat brackets that held the seat were broken, as were the attachment hinges on the seat backs. I looked for complete backseats at local junkyards, ebay, everywhere but never found anything of use.
So, instead of paying $250 and up, I made one myself. As for the battery, yea I wanted it in the spare tire well but I didn't want to cut that back piece and lose rigidity. As for the sub, it is a 90's box complete with an old school bazooka sub. It's been replaced with a very low pro black box with a downward firing 10" kicker. theres an inch of space between the sub and the delete kit.
I plan to buy a nice showy Optima billet cage once I finish my headliner and sunvisor changes...
