Can I get rid of the stock sender when installing a mechanical temp gauge and leave the elec. connector tied up.

Or does the computer use it to know when to go from closed to open loop?

Or does the computer use a different one somewhere else for that purpose?

It uses the ECT sensor which is on the heat rails. You will be fine with it died up but your stock gauge will not work.

Mackey is correct.

I relo'd the stock sender to the rear of the lower intake to keep the gauge functional.

Good luck.

That's a good idea. I plan on getting a set of mechanical gauges and I want to keep the water temp and oil pressure gauges functional. How would you hook up a mechanical oil pressure gauge and still be able to keep the stock one?

I used a Tee for both OP senders. I run two elec gauges though. For a mech gauge, you can do the Tee or remove the 'hex tube' that the stock sender mounts to and tap a hole for the mech line to screw into.
The stock sender uses 1/4" NPT threads and most aftermarket ones are 1/8". So just adapters/reducers accordingly.

Very simple stuff either way.
Good luck.
