cuz that 220 is n/a and pretty de-tuned at low compression. Stick a turbo on that stang you'll see better numbers on the stang than you will from the neon; without changin internals or rear end too.

that wasn't the point. he said if the 4cyl made 230 "N/A" it would be special, and i was just trying to point out that using the same logic my 4.6 N/A mustang would have needed numbers like 460 hp N/A to be special. and i'd hope you see better numbers on a turbo mustang since you're working with 4 extra pistons. and for the record, i'm pretty sure that a forged internal 4cyl 2.4 turbo engine is rated to handle more hp than the N/A version 4.6 engine before upgraded internals are needed. and i won't be changing engine internals, transaxle internals or axles when i install the stage 4 upgrade, but will upgrade the clutch. and i won't be surprised if the neon makes more hp on the dyno than my 10+ psi intercooled kb setup made on my mustang....and my stock transmission and axles w/4.10 gears on the mustang couldn't handle the 400+whp from the kb because it blew 3rd and 4th gear out of my automatic and put my axles out of action twice, but i doubt if 400+ whp from the stage 4 will start breaking axles and transmission gears on the neon.

I know some you guys will hate to hear this but stock versus stock, the SRT4 is faster than the 99-04 2V, not to mention it's more mod friendly. That's factory FI cars for ya. However, I still would NEVER trade my car, even if it was bone stock, for one.

. I agree with you on that. For it being a neon, it's a quick little car. All you that say it's not were probably beaten by one

drivers race between the 2.

230 is not rated at the wheel, but the crank. it may put out 230 at the wheels, which would make it underrated.

guess the guy saying 230hp out of an fi car isn't impressive, because there's really no "maximum engineering" out of it. like honda being able to squeeze 240 hp out of a 2.0. hp/liter wise would be impressive, if it was na. but us stock 2vers shouldn't really talk about efficiency .

Yea our GTs are very weak stock...the SRT-4 is faster stock for stock.

As far as which bottom end can take more power....well im running 9-10PSI right now depending on if I select boost group 1 2 or 3.
10PSI is right around 540RWHP. 8.7PSI is a dyno verified 498RWHP.

Whats the most powerful stock shortblock SRT-4?

And yes my car is a DD, its not a dyno queen that doesnt see any miles...I put around 1400 miles a month on my car, and go WOT alot

i've seen 500whp stock block srt's that had no problems and recently saw one dyno 600whp, but he's planning on a stroker upgrade soon.

maybe you just lucked out but my mustang leaked at the valve covers twice, pinion seal 3 times, transmission pan gasket, rear transmission seal, oil pan wasn't dripping but started to get that wet look, every section of the interior buzzed rattled and squeeked, blew 3-4 gear and lastly a rear axle called it quits twice..and all in under 33,000 miles and it only saw a track about once a year and i only drove it fairly hard about 1% of the time because it was mostly a daily driver in heavy traffic about 99% of the time. and the "p.o.s." neon still hasn't leaked 1 drop or squeeked 1 squeek in 19,600 miles. maybe i just got lucky with the neon and had bad luck with the mustang, but that wouldn't stop me from getting another mustang. actually, i plan on getting another one in the future and it will probably be a fully built KB or TT modular powerhouse mustang, but that'll come after i have the big turbo srt neon in the 500-600whp range and decide that i'm ready for something new.

I've seen that, there was a long drawn out thread about that very arguement on one board. Cobra owners steedfastly arguing the the Cobra is a Cobra not a mustang.

Pennywise reincarnated. I'd stick to the underpowered argument - that's logical. But your unreliable assertion just shows your stang was an anomaly; i dont see to many taxi or PD forces using turbo 4cylinders.

Ya know what gripes me about the SRT4, is that it has manual windows for the back windows I mean how friggin cheap is that Another thing is a wing big enough to hang laundry on I told my wife If I owned her car, that would be the 1st thing gone, besides deleting the cat, cranking up the boost etc........

what's underpowered?

my mustang wasn't actually unreliable, just had a few problems. and seems like i wasn't the only one here that ever had a rattling buzzing interior in a mustang that had off-road x-pipe with straight-through mufflers. i was just a little surprised when the neon didn't buzz and rattle when i put an off-road turbo-back exhaust on it. and as for the leaks, i doubt if that's so uncommon. blowing out overdrive, which takes out your 3rd gear at the same time is a known weak spot on the automatics, especially when running a kb blower. and the stock axles didn't like hooking up with the 4.10's and the torque of the kb, that's why they gave up when sticky tires were used.

and you're right, since most taxi cabs, police cars, police full-size suv's and meat wagons don't even offer 4cyl options in thier full-size vehicles...but i'm sure the "fleet" does see regular, or above average, time at the shop.

but weren't we juct talking about how SRT-4's put more power down? So a full size car shouldn't be a problem if it makes more power than the 4.6

How did this thread get revived?

Weird discussion... I think I'll add to the fire. Why put so much money in a 4-cylinder, front wheel drive, 4-door Dodge when you have (or had?) a twin screwed Mustang sitting in your garage? 4-cyl, FWD, Dodge, 4-door... my top 4 deal killers when looking at new sporty cars.

just that my stock srt dyno'd more than my stock mustang, while trying to confirm what others already mentioned about the "230hp" being underrated, but i don't see what that has to do with 4,000lb chargers and crown vics used as fleet cars?

I think the SRT-4 would be a fun little car. My buddy has a blue one and all I can say is its one fast car. I wouldn't mind haveing one. One thing I would do is take the wing off.

No matter what you say. The dodge neon srt 4 sucks big balls. Its sure fast but compare it to a cobra. Since it is in the same range of souping up. But have you really compared interiors. The dash is the same size as a Camaro's. The seats are cheap ass vinyl, with crappy cloth. Hell even the shifter looks like painted plastic. It might be fast. But how many girls would want to get in a souped up neon with a big wing. Hell the Mustang GT is a sex symbol. Nothing better than a two door V8. Don't come to a Mustang forum and talk about how the neon is not so bad. The thing sucks is ugly and is disscontinued.
