Confirming a GT?

Is there a mark on a vehicle to identify wether or not it was built as a GT? I have a vehicle with GT badging and a 5.0L HO, but the VIN is for a V6 stang. Is there a stamp on the transmission tunnel or anything?

Uh oh.. could be one of those "swap" cars...
There should be some more VINs on the bumpers.. check those first.. make sure your car isn't a wrecked mis match.

yeah, even the tranny can be from a different stang. what are some of the things that only the gt's had. didnt the v6 have a smaller rearend and not the 8.8?? how bout a foglight switch or foglights for that matter?? how bout the gauge cluster? how high does that go up to??

the vin shoudl be a dead giveaway that its not at all original

If the VIN doesn't have a T (5.0L) or a D (5.0L cobra)after the (42/43/44/45 body code), then it was likely built as a V6.

The rear end is a 7.5" in the V6. The mustang has the 8.8. Check the rear end.

The transmission/driveshaft is the same I think.

But if you keep the car, swap out the rear end to a 8.8. The 7.5's suck to hell for making power.

GT speedometer goes to 150mph. V6 Mustang only goes to 120mph. I think the 7.5" rearend on a V6 car has drum brakes but not really sure on that.

check the rear bumper ( providing its a 94/95 I assume it is since this is were you posted) If its GT it will say MUSTANG GT on the rear bumper, if not it will just say MUSTANG.

OK. Everything that I can think to look at (bumpers, speedo, tach, fog lamp switch) seem to indicate that this car was originally a GT. Except the VIN. The VIN has a 40 in it, indicating V6. When I asked the seller about this, he said that it was originally a V6 car, and that a wrecked GT was used as a donor car. Is there anything that I could check to verify which engine was originally in the car? I know some manufacturers stamp engine codes in the engine bay or on the tranny tunnel, but I don't know if Ford did this on the mustangs of this year (1995).

If the car was "flipped" to a gt and there is nothing wrong with the car and the price is right go for it. You insurance company with think it a V6 and not a V8 cheaper insurance they won't know. I know alot of people who do it with the fox cars just for cheaper insurance. Just a thought!

OK, so there is your answer! Why are you asking us when the previous owner ALREADY TOLD you it was a v6 converted to v8?

I ask if it really was originally a V6 car because the work seems so complete that I suspect it may have originally been a V8 car, and then someone along the way did something funny with the VIN and the title. That it has everything that I would suspect a factory GT to have, makes it seem like someone did very complete work on the V6-V8 conversion. Though of course the savings on insurance I do appreciate

If someone has a donor car, it wouldn't be hard at all to make it look perfect, all the parts are right there and alot of them are shared between the two.

1) Your car was originally a V6.
2) Before you buy make sure the rear and and tranny are V-8 pieces.

yeah, especially that rear end and tranny cause once you start putting power into that thing, you are gonna break those two first. plus i think first gear in the v6 tranny is fairly quick.

I would not feel bad about buying a V6 - V8 conversion, if it was done right. All Saleens, (excluding Saleen Cobras), were originally V6 cars. I would just make sure the rear end is an 8.8. To me the tranny would not be that big of a deal, because a t56 would be oing in there if I owned it.
