Considering a mustang, have questions

Hello, i am a senior in high school and about to start college. I am thinking about purchasing a mustang. I am looking at a 97-2000 4.6 V8. I am wondering what gas mileage one of these would get, and also how are they holding up for all of you. Please post what you have, mods, mpg, and the miles on the car with any problems (not related to user abuse) that you have. Thanks alot, i appreciate it.

Well if gas mileage is an issue for you (Student Understandable) maybe a STANG is not the best car for that. Unless you don't have to drive a lot and you live close to school. Then Do IT

I use to have an 88GT when I was in school and loved it even though it put nice dent in my $$ flow gas wise but did not really car.

With that models your looking at they may be a bit better but not much

I'd like to start off by saying, if you're going to get a GT, get a 1999 and up, dont get a 98 or older. 99-04 GTs came with 260hp stock, as opposed to 215 on the 96-97, and 225 on the 98s..99-04 are called "PI", or performance improved.

As far as gas milage, it differs with driving habbits. Someone else will chime in on that.

As far as problems, I have 91k miles on my '98 with very few problems. Nothing major at all. As long as you keep up with routine maintenence, you'll be fine.

The '96-98 GTs have the less powerful V8 at 215-225hp. The '99-04 GTs have the 260hp V8.

I have a 2001 4.6 GT, automatic, completely stock. 86k miles
At around 54k miles, The IAC had to be replaced. Nothing else so far.

I get anywhere between 18-25 mpg, depending on how many burnouts and hard launchs I go through. My average speed when driving is 50mph.

Well, you have to take into account some people might like the way '96-98's look more than '99-04's. It's not all about how much more power it has.

Generally I get 21 mpg in mixed driving, but I am also beyond the years of always driving blindingly fast every chance I get. My GT has always been very reliable, but again, I don't drive the crap out of it either.

True, I do really like the '96-'98 body style, but the power may weigh in a little more with some.

well on mine (96 gt) I get generally 22 mpg whether I drive "good" or not.
All I have really put into the car repair-wise is a water pump an intake and a voltage regulator on the alternator.
It has seen 120 km's (50k in last 3 years)

And I too got a 96 because I like the looks better then the newer style. 40hp is very attainable with a few mods...

Im a senior in high school too and I got mine right before my junior year. Personaly I would go with a 99-04, better looks IMO and has more power than the 94-98.

As far as MPG I got about 15-17 but this was about 99.9% in town driving when I was stock. Mine only has 20k miles on it and now has a new engine so I can't say much about how reliable it is. I havent had any problems other than my CD player would sometimes not work so I replaced it.

I'm a senior in high school and I have an 02. I drive like a nut so my gas mileage is terrible, but i LOVE the car. i do like the 96-98 style better though

Mileage in these cars fully depend on how you drive it. Its no civic, but i can make a tank last two weeks, i drive about 10 minutes to and from work. usually i fill up once a week cause i drive very agressively to and from work (****ing truckers be cutting me off and driving 20 in a 55).

though if youre looking for mileage, youre prolly looking at the wrong car. most college kids i know drive saturns and corollas.

man my wife doesnt know how to drive my car or something. she will run through gas quickly in the stang. i drive it for a week and the gas lasts me a week. i do 30 miles round trip between home/work. she will tear through half a tank in a day! must be driving habits.

Guess i should have clarified some more information. I currently own a 1990 gmc sierra. It has a 6 inch lift and 35's, and when i REALLY baby it i am still unable to get 11.5 mpg. My two options are either a toyota 4runner or a mustang. With the 4runner i will only get around 18 if im lucky, and with a stang i was hoping that i could get a minimum of 20 or so. My brother has a 96 mystic cobra and gets 22-25 consistantly. I will be living on campus, but probably work a couple days a week in my hometown (about 30 miles away). I will just make this drive probably 3 or 4 times a week, and may stay at my house some on the weekends to keep from driving back and forth. My budget is short, so whatever i get out of my gmc is about what i want to spend on another vehicle. I can get a nice mustang for 5-6 grand, plus get better mileage than a 4 runner. One reason i like stangs is that the parts are cheap if something does mess up, unlike toyotas. So, 20mpg sounds awesome to me, and is almost double what i have been getting. screw the gas mileage..get the stang and you will love it..im a senior in high school...I spend all my money on mods and gas for my stang..but who cares?..its what I like...I also have a 96 gt...I like the 96-98 body style more then the new style..and with 3.73s, l/t headers, and my brothers superchip tuner I ran side by side with a 2000 5 speed gt.

For 5-6 grand you will be somewhat limited on selection. I know around here you can’t find a 99 GT for 6 grand with out EXTREAMLY high mileage.

I wouldn't bet on that. Price or milage. If you baby a stang you will get 20mpg, if you drive it because it fun and using the "go" pedal lots to keep that smile on your face I'd say 15-18mpg is probably more like it.

I personally have never seen a "nice mustang" for 5-6 grand. Maybe you will get lucky and find a great deal though.

Those things being said... if I were you I'd look for a 1999 or 2000 GT.

If you get a 98' or older Stang, your brother's Cobra will eat it for lunch but the 99' should give it a good run. As for MPG, the 96'-98' and the 99'-up and the Cobra all get about the same. Reliability wise, they're all pretty good except you may have to change out the intake sooner or later if it hasn't already been changed, if it has been, you can tell b/c it will have the aluminum crossover.
You didn't say where you live, if you get much snow in the winter you may wish you had went with the Toyota. The best advice I can give would to do some test driving before you make any decisions.

Right now i am driving my dad's 1990 4 runner, which i like. I have driven my brothers mustang some and like it. I live in arkansas, and usually get a couple inches of snow each year, not much though. I am not getting the stang for the power, i am looking at one because it is a car that i like the look and feel of. I know that sounds crazy but i really dont care if my brothers cobra will eat mine or not, that isnt why im buying. If it was i would get a fox body with a 5.0 and mod it out. The deciding factor will be insurance, because right now i am not paying for it, my parents are. If i get something new, i will be paying for it. Thanks for the help.

Also, if you are 18 years old, expect to pay roughly $300 a month at the very least for insurance. Massachusetts has very high insurance rates, so thats what Im basing this on. More than likely your insurance will cost more than your monthly payment.

Ouch...
I've had an exhibition driving ticket on my record for the last 2 years and only pay $140 a month on Insurance. That is MN though.
