A few weeks ago I decided to make a console for my stang since I didn't have a dedicated space to put my cellphone, coins, switches, etc.
So I started this project with one thing in mind and that is "saving in materials", not because I am cheap, but I am saving to buy suspension mods which indeed are more useful. I started to recollect some boards of MDF, an aluminum panel, and other stuff from my dads and/or brothers projects which were laying around here in the house.

So far I have only spent in: screws, a pair of hinges, black speaker enclosure carpet and a carbon fiber vinyl sheet = around $20 bucks.

And some days later I ended up with this:

and then this:

Right now I am somewhat stuck because I need to make the cellphone compartment and a cup holder, but since I don't know how I will be doing those things I am reluctant to making more holes to the aluminum panel (it haven't been easy working with it, mostly because I don't have the right tools).. do you guys have some ideas?

I will really appreciate them.

go to junkyard and look at late 90s mustangs. They had molded cup holders in console. use them to take measurements and stuff. Also look for other compartments to get ideas. I could see those racing fuel doors for the top of the cup holder. Possibly for a cell phone compartment.

What about getting some kind of insertable cup holder from a junkyard? Maybe a little tray too with a plastic flange that will just hang it in there. I've seen those guys on Unique do some cool interior stuff using fabric and bondo too. You might get some ideas watching them.

Also I noticed that Mustangs Plus is now selling a complete console kit for the 67/68. Something like $900 bucks! Ouch.

Is the carbon fiber vinyl sheet ridget or like typical vinyl material?. If it is ridgid, where did you find it?

Is your car a stick or auto. Check the operation of the shifter, yours looks higher then mine and with a boot on it will not let it stay in 2nd or 4th ans the angle of the shifter hits(bacuae i didnt want a big hole cut out)

I was going to suggest as a previous poster did, go check out a big boat supply store, or look online - boaters world, overtons, west marine - they will have plastic, probably alum. and SS if you want to keep that look.

I like this, I was planning the same thing after the car is running well, I'm going to go lower so it doesn't over shadow the shifter if it still has to be mounted to my hump, I also thought about spending the $40 and getting the repro. SS door below the radio and incorporate it into the console. I'll want mine high at the rear like your's though so I have something to lean on while I drive and store more 'stuff', maybe lockable.
Good work, keep at it!

Yeah I will probably go tomorrow morning to a junkyard and look for those things; if I dont find anything useful I will try one of those boat supply stores. Thanks

Its the typical vinyl material, I really need it to be quite flexible, but you can buy the rigid type here: http://www.dragonplate.com/ecart/categories.asp?cID=3
(Jerry S found the website)

its a stick. I have checked the operation and it works well without the hurst shifter boot, but I will probably buy those leather one to avoid that problem.. either way the one I have right know is in very bad shape.

Hehe, console galore. Just got the waterjet cut aluminum parts for my "console". I use a B&M Pro Ratchet shifter but needed somewhere to put additional switches & lights. The original housing for the B&M is very thin, so the new one is cut in 2mm sheet. Can't be seen in this rendering, but the brake bias adjuster knob is going on the back of the console. I'll post pics when I have bent and assembled.

Thats a nice design DK832, it would be nice to see pictures when it is assembled.

Update: I just covered the side panels with black carpet, and tomorrow I will glue the carbon fiber "trim". As far as the cup holder thing, I went to check to a nearby junkyard and didn't find anything I like.. they didn't have late model mustangs with the console still attach so I will be looking for one the next weekend.

I'll post pics tomorrow when I reassembled it.

You might want to check the parts store. They sometimes have accessory cupholders.

Here is what I have been working on; the first pic is the mock up I did, and the second is my first draft ( I may end up making some changes).

Thats a very slick design, I like the curve that goes from the armrest to the console itself.

Anyway, here are come pics of my console so far. I need to install the armrest cover and put some kind of foam on the top of it, and some other details. After that I think I will let it that way until I find the right pieces it needs.

Some really cool ideas in this thread.
I have been contemplating installing some sort of console.
I just can't find the right look for me.

Great work, guys! I've got to do the same thing for the 'vert. Hopefully life is settling down and I can start working on it again. Too many things have been going on, and getting everything buttoned up on my 'daily driver' goat has been slooow. My real DD at this point is a '99 minivan w/ 147k miles!
