convertible diet

Convertibles already have what amounts to a G-Trac bar (i think...haven't been under my car in a while). They defintely have additional bracing in that area. I know that for sure.

Those things are a big JOKE. Mine were bent up like pretzels and I pulled them off to install a Kenny Brown chassis kit. Now it's very tight.

High Speed tanning bed

I could never get rid of my drop top. Weight really never bothered me especially after I installed the ATI P1SC. Of course I did the normal Jenny Craig stuff like k-member, battery relocation, alum heads, no windshield wipers, etc. If you want to race, go ahead and get that coupe, if you want to look good and work on that tan and smack people on the road that dont want to act right, just look at this ride here. I read about this car a in many mags, but when I saw it in person, my life with my convertible changed. Over 700 hp. On top of that John has pwersteering and AC. Check out his site and YOU decide! http://www.superstang.com/

Tom - normal torsion of the chassis do it, or do folks use them as jacking points?

Couldn't tell, but they are a thin wall tube shaped in a "V" with the ends smashed flat and a hole drilled in them. There are two of them and one open end of the V goes forward to the radiator support and the other open V goes to the rear out to the floor pan from the K memeber where both tops of the V's are bolted to the K memeber. They fold up at the end of the falttened section with little trouble due to the thin tubes.

Stop the bashing

Man, stop bashing on the verts. I've owned a hatch 89 GT before and I love my 88 vert GT a thousand times more. Just becasue they take a little more time and effort to properly modify gives no one the right to knock them. Anyone can easily go find a hatch GT, but go and try to find a decent vert GT with a 5-speed.....good luck. Plus they look a lot better than the boxy hatches, and go over allot better with the ladies. A true mustang is a drop top!

This is why I am sellling my vert. I never had one and never will own one again. Reason is to heavy and way to much extra money to make it into a track car. If you like the bling crap and cruising its cool but hell Id rather buy a jeep with a soft top. Now I have a BA SVO and will never go back.

800 lbs to be exact. Verts are nice for street driving like you state. How many drag stangs do you see that are a Vert? In my personal opinion, I would keep it, unless you are pure drag.

One more post in support of the convertibles. I love mine and I've seen some really nice ones around town. I've also seen some really nice coupes and some really nice Hatches. Am I allowed, to post that I like my car without flaming every body else? Doesn't look like it.

Anyway, coil over Kit should save some weight as well as tubular A arms and fiberglass hood and trunk as mentioned. You will have to add subframes, but you should add subframes to ANY stang you race. Even the coupes and hatchbacks have an amazing amount of body flex. As far as T roofs go, you might as well drive a convertible because a T roof car flexes almost as bad as a vert.

To reduce weight if this has not been mentioned:
1. Remove the smog pump (emissions)
2. Remove all carpet from trunk and panels along with jack and spare (when racing).
3. Remove hood insulation
4. Remove all unused brackets on motor
I am sure someone has mentioned all of the insulation for sound along with a fiberglass hood and replace anything that is cast iron with aluminuim.

Can you feel the love? I feel more like I own an import on this forum by owning a vert. I thought we were all mustang lovers no matter the breed of horse we drove. I love my vert and will never sell it. I can't say that I see a major difference in performance either. When it was stock, it woukld run even with other hard top stangs.... You're going to see bigger differences in 1/4 times from driver ability than you are with weight differences. Lets keep it on topic guys instead of bashing each other.
As far as weight savings, most have been mentioned......

I agree with all above. You wanna race, get lighter, buy a hard top. Convertables suck, I have two and plan to sell both. I won't buy a vert again.

CB
Conv. suck to you because you don't know how to lighten them up and make the chassis race worthy...I love my conv..it's 2980 lbs,,caged,, and over 450 to the wheels,,I eat coupe's for lunch..DOn't let anyone tell you vert;s suck,,just need to know how to build one up,,,,What would you rather drive around on a nice sunny 80deg day....ya...that's what I thought,,you can keep you coupe!!

love my vert

i got an 89 lx vert and wouldnt trade it for a notch every1 racing has a notch..when u have a vert every1 expects you to be slow and thats what i like...my car will be running low 12's this year possibly 11's with the juice....as far as weight there isnt much...get rid of the smog pump ,get an 83.5 inch belt, lose the clutch fan and shroud get an electric one...battery in the back..when u race front sway comes out...other then that u can sacrafice a/c but i wouldnt do that....put aluminum heads u can lose a few pounds...seats are worth nothing in weight...spare tire and jack out..either way just remember this if you want your vert to go as fast as a notch then you gotta really double your work....and make sure u r precise with everything especially your driving.......then when u do beat that notch ull get that much more respect!!!
