Convertible help needed Please

Hello all, please help a confuzed feller out. Trying to determine where the convertible top mechanisms are leaking on her 03. I don't know jack about hydraulics but trying to understand. When the top on the car is UP, is the fluid in the pump or in the cylinder?

When the top is up, most of the fluid is in the cylinders. When you retract the top to put it down, the cylinders empty and most if not all the fluid is now in the pump. For this reason the pump needs to be filled when the top is down to fill to proper level.

Thank you for that. So if the Cylinder is going to leak it would be when the top is up. If the cylinder seal was leaking it would blow oil out whle raising the top?

Yes and yes, but it can also leak when top down if the leak is one of the hydraulic line connectors.
Thank you thank you. I think it's the hose, which I already have the kit. One video I watched said fill the cylinder, raise the top and then finish filling. Is that correct? If the fluid is supposed to return to the cylinder when it comes down, wouldn't that then be overfull and either lock up or blow a seal or line?

There's a few ways to skin a cat, but ultimately final level needs to be set with the top down. Fill the pump to the top where it starts spilling out the spill plug. Run the top up and down 3-4 times and check and add to the level with the top down.

If you will with top up, when you lower the top the excess fluid will come out the fill port hole. So while you can certainly prefill the cylinder, just keep in mind all that fluid will return to the pump with top down.

How to get the air out of the lines? Just keep running up and down the top? Or pop one of the lines loose to let air out?

Just run the top up and down a few times, top the fluid off, rinse and repeat. Wou;dn't hurt to spread it out over a day or two to allow any accumulated air bubbles in the oil to rise to allow you to fully purge the air out.
