Hey, been gone a while, finally got everything fixed up. I have a new problem now though. If I'm on the highway cruising at 70ish, I hear a very loud whooshing sound coming from where the top of the window shield connects with the convertible top. Sometimes, the passenger side latch actually comes loose and the top comes off! As you can guess, this is pretty dangerous and I need to get it sorted out quickly. What could be causing this and how can I fix it?

New latch. I'm having a similar problem. Mine loosens when fully closed. They're $125 a piece.

Holy christ that's expensive! Where can you get them? Is there a cheaper way to do it?

I haven't found one. I saw them at the same price on-line and at the dealership.

hmm, $80 is easier to stomach. I'm going to tool around with it this weekend to see if I can fix it without buying the part. This car is nickle and diming me to death.

If you're talking about this one: http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/iwwida.pvx?;item?item_no=LRS-50648B 1&comp=LRS

then that's just the hook and isn't what I need, at least, not sure about you.

maybe its not the whole latch you have to replace maybe its just the J-hook. Had that proble before but just tighten the hooks. Problem solved.

Satan does have a point. If it's just that, then a couple of turns to the hooks might do the trick. FWIW, my hooks have never come unscrewed on either of my 2 mustangs.

Yup thats why they are threaded. To take up a small amount of slack and wear. I would go easy on the turning though maybe 2 turns max. You want the handle to be tight just before it goes into the slot in the roof beam. Does that make sense? Should be sort of hard once it gets say an inch or so from the beam then it will go over center and lock. If you wing the J bolt to much you can break the bolt or the windshield frame where it latches.

I'm sure you already know this but just in case you dont, when you latch the top down, make sure you dont pull on the handle. Pull on the center part that kind of dips down. Its much sturdier and will not bend. I learned this the hard way and had to get it fixed. Oh and check craigslist for the latch. I saw a couple on the seattle craigslist. They might be willing to ship

same problem

I had to replace the latch, and every couple of weeks adjust the hook so that the top pulls down snugly
