convertible top wont retract

Help my 88 convertible top will not go down on its own, but it will go up, battery is low but why won't it even try to go down, currently have the interior gutted for restoration and need to direct this prob. asap. thanks

does the pump engage when you hit the switch?
If it does then I would look at the steel cables that attach to the front of the top. they assist in pulling the top back when the pump engages.
If the pump does not engage then I would check your switch first and then trace it back all the way to the pump.

i have an 89 and had the same problems...there are 2 relays that should be sitting back by the pump for the top... if you dont know where the pump is located, it sits right behind the rear seats. have a buddy push the switch while u sit in the trunk and listen. if the switch is pushed and the pump doesnt turn on, check the relay to hear a click. if there is no click, the relay MIGHT be bad. they are only like 10 bucks from the auto parts store, but you know that the other relay works since the top does work in one direction, so swap the relays and see if the top works in the opposite direction..

thats just my previous experance, it may not be right at all, so please investigate before you buy parts..

Thanks just found problem a pin pulled out of the harness at the switch thanks
