My wife doesn't drive manual tranny cars.....so I am contemplating swapping the toploader for a slushbox I know, I know.

Any way......I have a 67 with a 410hp and 400+ft/lb 351w in it......what would be the best trans to pop in and what do I need?

I figure I need a new crossmember, tranny, flexplate, converter, shifter, different top for my consol......what else???

No, I would be keeping it, along with the original motor....in my shed, in case I ever sell the car.

Its easier to go FROM a standard to an Auto than the other way around, particularly if you don't mind leaving that extra pedal in there as a foot rest.

Your choices in an Auto are far more limited than with a standard. Assuming you don't want the hassle of a powerglide conversion you've got two hot options. Either a C4 or an AOD will have to be built-up to handle your motor. The AOD option will cost you a few hundred dollars more than the C4 for the same level of power input. The AOD of course has the extra gear but it weighs more and has more parasitic loss than the C4. Expect to pay about $2K for a built AOD that can live behind your 400+ fwhp.

Then you'll need an automatic flexplate (flywheel), block plate, torque converter, crossmember, shifter and shift linkage. All five of those items are specific to the trans you choose to use (AOD can use a C4 shifter with the right linkage though). In addition should you choose the AOD you'll need a TV cable since they are throttle-position sensitive.

You know what I think you should pick based on my sig. B&M and TCI make a drop-in AOD that can handle up to 450fwhp for less than $2K, Lentech makes the best ones and they can reach $3K with little effort.

Don't forget the cooler! Either get a radiator for an automatic or an external cooler.

I would personally look at some of the big racing tranny companies,B&M, etc and try to get a C-4. You lack the overdrive gear but you get a light stout package and I've always known them to be stronger than an AOD. I've saw stock C-4s hold up to 400+hp before. I'd get a built one though but it's been done.

Easy swap.

Auto radiator
Fluid lines (make 'em yerself)
No driveshaft mods if you use a C4 or FMX
No crossmember mods if you do as above
Cable operated aftermarket shifter, unless you just have to have stock style.
Auto trans starter
When you disconnect the linkage, the clutch pedal will stay against the floor pan. Just lift the carpet up, drop the pedal, put the carpet down... it will hide nicely.
If you want a larger brake pedal, take off the stock pedal pad and store it away, weld the left side of an auto pedal that you cut from a donor car, to the side of the brake pedal, then install the larger pedal pad from the donor car. When you ever switch back, grind the weld apart and re-install smaller pedal pad.

It would be easier and cheaper to just teach her to drive a stick. You could even let her practice on you.
