Converting from carb 2.3 to 5.0, but no comp!

I have an 85 2.3 that im going to convert to a 5.0 from an 83. My 85 has a comp but the 83 does not. Is this swap possible? Anybody have any info on this?

I would think that you would want all the fuel pumbing ( tank, lines, etc) from a 79-83 carbed 5.0 stang. You are going to end up splicing some of the engine harness wiring to use the stock gauges & their wiring or get a 5.0 harness from a 79-83 car.

I have a 83 5.0 donor car i can strip out. So it will work with my 85 2.3 that has a comp?

any 5.0 will fit in your car... will it work with the comp? nope. the older 5.0 engine has a carb, so no need for injection computer. the ignition wiring on the older 302 is a piece of cake too..

1) bolt in the 5.0 driveline (rear end, trans, and engine)...

2) get fuel to the mechanical fuel pump... i'd use a 12volt el cheapo electric pump and bypass the mechanical one on the block.

3) get power to the ignition module.

4) go drivin.

caveat: some parts of above description are not as easy as explained.

irrelavant

you are removing the 2.3 so the "comp" you're talking about is no longer required.

think basic man... to make that old 302 run you need to get fuel from the back of the car to the mechanical fuel pump and power to the ignition for spark.

to accomplish this i would (you can do it differently if you want) remove the mechanical pump on the 302 and install a 12 volt electric pump in the back of the car, with a pressure regulator up front.

i would then grab the wiring diagram for the old 302 car and find out how the ignition is powered. it's prolly only one hot wire on the module.

I assume you mean computer when you say comp.

I think you have the early version of EEC, maybe 3 but probably 4, and all it runs in the car is the carb idle circuit and motor, based on the O2 sensor signal, and probably does the ac, and PS idle up function. It may control the timing but I am not sure.

I am not sure about the fuel pump, but for a carbed 5.0 you just need stuff to feed a carbed 5.0. A mechanical fuel pump if you engine has one is fine.
You will most likely need a Duraspark2 box and will need to wire it to the ignition. The existing computer can go on the shelf.

Probably the best way is to just swap the entire v8 wiring harness in the car.

Be careful, the gage cluster circuit boards are wired differently between years and should be carfully checked before you plug them in. My best starting bet is to use the carbed v8 under hood harness, the cars original under dash harness and the car gage cluster. You may need to swap the v8 tach or set the tach switch to the 8 setting if it has one.

run an external electric fuel pump, up to a carb, run an msd 6al with magnetic leads from the dizzy,then to a blaster coil. FP and MSD with power switches in the car. Hide them. Thats all you need, for guages, go aftermarket anyways.
