other than the dash, everything is a direct swap from 79-89. 90-93 uses three point rear seat belts. This becomes and issue if you want a black interior. Iswapped my 89 over to a 93 interior. Rear quater panels were differant, seat belts were differant (front and rear) and the rear package tray was differant (for the rear seat belt mounts)

Stang89, did you add the rear 3 point belts to the swap, or did you just use lap belts instead?
I want to put the shoulder belts in the back of my 88 Coupe so the kids can start riding in the back.

I just got all new black interior yesterday for my 88 coupe forgot all about the 3 point belts in the back. I took them to.(black interior came out of a 93)

Guess i will have to dye my seat belts in the back.

Mounting the dash is the hardest part. (swaping from 79-86 to the newer style dash)

Did you pulll the parts from the donor car or were they already out? Curious to find out how the coupes had the shoulder belts bolted in.

If you don't end up using them let me know.

If you plan to use the 87-93 center console, the e-brake handle has to be relocated, and the rear mount for the center console has to be put in place..

the 90-93 rear seats won't work in your car, nor will the 1/4 panels if you want to make it look right. 90+ quarters have seatbelt cutouts..if you don't fill those holes with a seatbelt, it'll look hokey. Also, the seatbelts are mounted higher on the piller, so you'll have to punch a hole in your quarters for your location, then you'll have a funky hole up there.

as for the 86 interior, why swap it? the 86 interior looks badass. It looks like a true fox musclecar should. Don't get me wrong, I love the 87+ cars, but the dashes look more like they came from a ford tempo than a mustang.

If you really must swap, the dash will swap, but it will require lots of work, including a COMPLETE massive rewire of the under dash electronics.

rear 1/4s from an 87-89 will bolt in, but won't look right with the 86 rear 1/4 windows...there will be a huge gap..so you'll have to swap the windows too.

for complete interior conversion on all fox years, check out my bro's tech writeup article.

btw, cruise on over to foureyedpride.com forums and show off your 86!!

V8only thanks for the info.

I'am only going to take the rear seat cover off and put it on my back seat. As far as seat belts the car is geting a cage, so I'am going to run 5 point harness in the front and back. So the hole on the 1/4 panels will be empty anyways.

How hard do you thing its going to be to put the dome light in? I took the headliner and the dome light out of the 93 to put in my 88. I want to do away with the map light and the 88 dome light. I like the 93 dome light better.

I pull the interior my self. The rear shoulder belts are mounted on the flat spot in the back window. I believe they where 16mm bolt or torx bolt can remember. The fronts where #50 torx bit.

I tried using a 93 dome light in my 87 and couldn't get it to fit right. The metal bracket that is welded to the roof is different for the newer dome light and it ended up sitting crooked. I ended up using a dome light from a 95, and it looks a lot better than any of the Fox ones IMO.

I ran the map light power from the stock front map light, and wired the rest to the door switches.

If anyone will ever use those rear seat belts, get some black ones. Seat belts are made out of nylon. Dye won't penetrate. It just lays there waiting to smear on skin, clothes, etc.

Just look for 79-83 lap belts for the rear. Black was available that year.

You can use the rear panels and not use the 3-point seatbelts. It won't look that weird.

I run lap belts with the black 3-point panels and it's never bothered me.

Here's a shot in the middle of my conversion (i hadn't changed the dash and center console yet so that's why they are still red)

I'am planing on using 5 point harness anyways. The ones in the back will only be for looks anyway with the cage in the car. Thanks for the info tho.
