Coolant on top of Water Pump. Whats leaking?

I popped my hood today to find a tiny puddle on top of both sides of the water pump. I cleaned it up, but cant find any leaks. I drove it for about 25 min popped the hood and nothing. I let it sit for a hour or so, and there was a tiny bit of coolant there again. I cant find any leaks. Whats this sound like so i can find it quick. I would think a hose but i cant find anything.

sounds like the gasket between the waterpump and the backing plate is shot this just happened to me. When you pull the pump off you will notice 2 16mm bolts on the bottom of the pump if you unscrew them and remove the backing plate you will probably notice the gasket is shot. so put some gasket maker in there and bolt the plate back on then make sure you put a good amount of gasket around the two openings that match up with the timing cover and around the rest of the backing plate!! bolt it back up let it dry and the problem should be solved!! takes about 30 minutes.

if all else fails. If you can get your hands on a cooling system pressure tester. You can pump your cooling system to spec (16psi) on a cool engine and look around to see if you can see a leak. Also watch the gauge to make sure that it always stays at 16psi and doesnt bleed down. If it bleeds down you have a leak. Good luck

i'm having the same problem, looks kinda like the hose from the thermo. housing to the water pump is my culprit and I think maybe the water pump gasket as well...knowing my luck, probably both.

its just the housing where the thermostat is.

they do that alot and its only a 1 dollar gasket

mine does this but i ignore it because I am lazy

Mine was the same. I just put the thinnest layer of RTV in there and no more problem. (Mine is the notorious chrome housing.)

Should I try some stop leak stuff 1st, and see if that works?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

DO NOT PUT STOP LEAK IN YOUR COOLING SYSTEM.

If you have ever taken a motor apart that has the **** poured in, it is terrible, try the gasket, and go from there..


I REPEAT, DO NOT USE STOP LEAK

No stop leak in the system. Gravity pulls the coolant down - duh - so look at all interfaces that are above the top of the timing chain cover. You've got a portion of the water pump (2 bolts) gasket that is higher, and you've got the upper radiator hose, the bypass hose, and the t'tsat housing. It's coming from one of those sources.
