my car runs fine going down the road, but when at a stop light the temperature climbs. I know that it will climb because it's not getting all the air at the light as opposed to me going down the road. But yesterday in the driveway i let it idle after a drive and the fan came on at about the m on the normal guage and then it cooled down i let it go back up and just as the fan started to comeback on the engine shut off. i believe we put a 165 themostat in it awhile ago. Also there is a tube leading from the radiator cap to what i believe is the overflow bottle which was disconnected, can there be air in my system? Any help would be appreciated.

Take the radiator to get flushed. Might be so dirty in there that it won't cool the water if it's not getting air. Another option would be a weak water pump.

get rid of the 165 and put in a 185* t-stat. the 165 doesn't give it enough time to cool the radiator back down before it throws more coolant in there.

if your that worried, buy the summit alum. radiator it fits right in. a lot of people are running them on here, do a search you'll find a couple threads about it

You would have to fab up some brackets but nothing a local shop can't do if you don't have the supplies.

If it runs cool on the highway, the radiator is capable of rejecting enough heat. Your low speed fan doesnt come on till ~208*F. So no matter what stat you have, while stationary, you are gonna heat up unless you have a means of turning on the fan sooner.

Good luck.

bill302 is right. Definately hook that back up if you haven't. Check your radiator... is it even full? If the overflow is disconnected you could have puked your coolant out.

I definitely reconnected the overflow to the radiator as soon as i saw it was unkooked the i took it for a drive the next day and checked the overflow level after a drive. it was only full to the cool line so i added what was needed to the over flow tank (50/50 mix).

Was the overflow empty before? And how was the radiator?

radiator was fine, but the overflow was only full to the cool line when it should have been to the hot line on the overflow tank. like i said before the fan came on while idleing once and cooled it down some but right when the fan started the second time the engine just shut off. since connecting the overflow i haven't even tried to check the fan while idleing, i'll do that today as well as get some water wetter.
