I have a 2001 Mustang GT and I recently had it in and they were going to change the transmission fluid. They said they weren't able to tell what kind I had because my VIN brought up 2 kinds, a regular and a synthetic. They called the Ford dealership and they had no idea what to suggest.

Is there any way of finding out what I have in mine? They said they didn't want to put the wrong kind in. What would my year car normally use?

Excellent, thank you. I'm not sure why the Ford dealership couldn't have been a help.

I had Mercon V in mine for a while, and it felt better than the old stuff that was in the trans when I got the car, but when I put in some synthetic GM Synchromesh, the difference was AMAZING. I could practically look at the shifter, and it would go in gear. This was of course, after a new clutch, pilot and throwout bearings, and clutch fork and pivot ball.

Is mercon 3/5 synthetic or no? Will i need the friction modifier or is it already in it? What brands make it? Can i use synthetic ATF?

Isn't 2001 the year ford changed transmissions halfway through the year?

SO he could have either a t-45 or a t-3650 in his car.

The t-45 uses the regular while the 3650 uses synthetic.

He needs to look at his door jamb and read the code under TRANS

TR is the t-3650
The t-45 is a number...either 5 or 6
