I bought a 2002 motor for the price of a head swap kinda. I was looking and for a full head swap kit that included new covers, plugs, wires, oil, gaskets exc... it was 1500 not including shipping. You could do a head swap in your driveway and with advance auto allowing you to loan out tools you would need for free -minus the refundable deposit- ... If I were you I would just look for a whole motor first. I guess I got a little lucky but you should be able to find a 99+ motor and then have a shop swap it in for realtively cheap...
