around here its about $700-800 to pull and drop the motor back in. Like everyone says, this is where you save your pennies by doing it yourself. To pull just the motor, its pretty easy just a little time consuming. I figures you can do it with 2 people start to finish in about 4 hours if you take your time. Another 4 hours to drop it back in.
You will need some special tools (will maybe 1 or 2) to do it. You will need a jack and a cherry picker. $300 total and you have them forever
First thing to do is pull the hood. Drain all your fluids like oil and antifreeze. Pull all the carb stuff off (carb, gas lines, linkage, air cleaner) and then go ahead and pull the ignition stuff (dist, coil, plug wires, spark plugs)... pull the accessories (alternator, power steering pump, brackest, a/c compressor, starter) and then pull your exhaust off and the motor is basically ready to come out. Put the jack under the transmission pan to hold it up.
This is a fun part. Have a buddy use a 15/16" socket on a breaker bar. Have him turn the motor over clockwise while you are under the car. You need to disconnect the torque converter from the flexplate (if its an auto... if not, just unbolt the tranny from the motor) there are 4 bolts that connect the torque convert to the flexplate. when thats done, time to pull the motor itself.
Hook up the cherry picker to intake bolts or head bolts (the ones the accessories hookup to, not the acutal head bolts) and then unbolt the motor mounts. Either the long bolt or the 2 the hold it to the motor, it doesnt matter.
Pull away and you are set. To drop it back in, do the same thing in reverse.
