I recently called the nearest Ford dealer and asked how much it would cost to install 3.73 gears with an Auburn differential. They said it would be about $500 labor + another $100 to correct the odometer. Sounds like too much to me. How much should it cost?

Thanks,

$500 including gears, speedo correction gear install kit and install. $500 just for install! That is way too much to pay.. Stealership LOL!!!Find a nice reputable rearend shop. $150 for the gears. Ford motorsport I hope. speedogear $10. install kit $75 and 3 hours at $50-$60p/hr for install. roasting your tires priceless... :nice:

Best way to do it is go to a mustang club or something. Or if you know a guy who is a whiz at that stuff because gears and speedo calibrations require grade A skills. I found a guy at my local mustang meet who hooked me up with his friend that has his own gear install shop. I going to be getting them in within the next few weeks. He said he'd put in my moser axles and my gears for $200. That is a steal. I'd do that before trying out shops if you can.

Is your car an auto? If it's manual, all you'll need is a small gear that goes in your tranny to correct your speedometer/odometer. For an automatic, it would be a little more because I believe you need a chip (I could be wrong) but those prices are still outrageous. Never get anything done at Ford unless the insurance is paying for it. Call different shops around your area and find out. Some will work with you if you have a set idea on how much you want to spend. When I got my stereo installed, the price came pretty high, so I left and as I was walking out I ran into the manager or whatever so I told him I couldn't do it then. He knocked almost half of the labor off since he looked at it and saw it shouldn't be that difficult. Not sure if that'll work but ask around and compare.

dealers are a rip off. $90 per hour. :bs:

my gears were like $169 and the labor for the install was $260 ($65/hr, 4 hrs). since my car had 80,000 miles on it and the carrier bearing was whining, i also had new bearings and stuff put in at the same time (he had it opened up anyway), so the rear end would be finished -- no more worries. the other stuff was like $100.

Figure 3-4 hours labor. You don't need an install kit, unless something is broken.

But if something is broken, then the shop can have autozone/Ford get them the part they need. The carrier bearings & pinion bearings are normal stock.

Just get a new differential shaft locking bolt from Napa, and friction modifier from Ford. The bolt is cheap, and your stock one is likely bent.
