Ugh, first of all I feel like an idiot so no laughing.

I ran out of gas, but I didn't know that is what happened. I was driving on the highway and it started sputtering so I broke down at a light. Cop came and everything. I was trying to rev it and it was lean backfiring so bad and I thought I heard something metal like clank around.

Could I have done any damage? What could have happened? It seemed to run fine...

The biggest issue I see is that the pump might be on the outs now. The reason (twofold) is that the fuel is what cools the pump, and with no fuel to pump, the diaphram can overheat. Second, all the crap settles into the bottom of the tank, so a lot of that probably got sucked through.

All in all, no biggie. We are enthusiasts and slap our hands for doing such things, but look at how many people out there run out of gas every day.

You might want to swap the fuel filter not far down the line, and other than that, just wait and see what happens.

Good luck.

I did that once (doh! ) and the only thing that happened was I clogged my fuel filter...Like hissin said a lot of the junk on the bottom of the tank probably got sucked into the system. I changed my filter and through in some fuel system cleaner and all was good.

I had a buddy who "broke down", cursed his mustang and paid $90 for a tow home just to find out he was out of gas. Lession here? Put the gas needle in the right spot when you install white face gauges
