First off, what did the 180 mph speedo come in (87-93) mustang? If I were too get one would I have to change anything aside from the cluster? It will be going in my '87 gt.
Second..... with me not having the smog stuff on my car (already been deleted) do I still need the egr valve? If so why?

I am getting some good deals on the cluster and the egr delete (the actual spacer not just a plate to cover the hole) and was needing some info before I buy.

Thanks,
Nate

Your car will throw a code if you remove the EGR valve and don't eliminate it with a chip. The higher MPH speedo came on 1990+ cars. Don't quote me on this, but if I remember right the harness is slightly different on the earlier clusters and you can't directly swap them. I could be wrong on that point.

The egr isnt really an issue it doesnt matter wether I delete it or not, I do really need to know about the guage cluster though. What '93 model came with a 180 speedo and will I have problems putting it into my '87?

180mph? Possibly the 93 Cobra...but I don't think any Foxbody came with a 180mph speedo. The 90+ GTs came with a 140, and you can get a 160mph Ford Racing speedo. If you are lucky, you might be able to find a pre 90 with a 140, but those typically only came in police cars and a few GTs. They are not direct swap, the clusters were different between airbag and non-airbag Mustangs.

All I know is that the guy saidthat he had a 140 out of his wrecked '92 and a 180 out of his old '93 and thathewould take $50.00 for either one of them. I figured that the 180 would either be a ford motorsports of a cobra so that is the one I am going to get. Beats paying $209.00 for the 50resto 140 for the '87 models. I can always make my money back by reselling if I cant install it.

I don't know af any cars that originally had a 180, (Saleen perhaps?) but you have to know what you are buying and how to swap it over. If it is a 90-93 entire cluster, it is not a direct swap. The wiring is different as was said. You can however swap just the speedometer part with a few mods noted in this thread:

http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=482678&highlight=140+speedo

I have a 140 speedo from a 92 in my 87 cluster.

As everyone else, not sure about the 180, but the 140 from an 89 is pretty much your best bet for the 87. Otherwise w/ the airbag in the 90-93, the base of the speedo looks different and dosen't fit.

you can do that, but it'll still have the gearing behind it for the 85mph speedo. You'd have to adjust it on the tranny end. I don't know if you could get it down far enough to make the difference. When I swapped the whole cluster I was worried about that difference, but the different gearing in the speedo made it dead on w/ no other changes.

So can I still use the speedo? Yall said the cluster itself wouldnt fit but what about just the speedo? If I end up wanting to use the whole cluster, what or where would I find the wiring diagram to hook it up? If it is a true legit 180 then I would love to have it in my car but if I cant get it to work then maybe I can get enough out of it to get the 140 retro kit from 50resto.

If you can disassemble the cluster and take the speedo face and all the gearing (odometer, cable hookup, everyting) out it should transplant into the 87 cluster fine. Then you'd be good to go.

OK so I went ahead and bought the speedo. On my own stupidity by not paying attention, I bought a 180 kph speedo. It is however a SVO Ford motor sports speedo with only 77,000 miles on it. So my next question is this.... On the metric mustangs (you know what I mean) what did the factory speedo go up to? On either the '87 - '89 cars and also the '90- '93 cars.

It is an issue because if you delete it you will need to turn the fuel curves of the car for it. It doesn't really offer any gain, so not worth the effort.

No Mustang came with a 180MPH speedo. 140MPH was the most for factory stock and the 90-93 police mustangs came with a 160MPH.

Saleens may have a 180 or 200MPH, but the gauge face will read SALEEN

Brother performance offers a 180MPH conversion though. That's what it may be

90-93 style gauge pods will not direct swap into 87-89 cars.

That would be 77,000 kilometers...or 48,000 miles. It's gonna read your milage in KM's.

I beleive there was a 140 km/h and a 180 km/h speedo for the canadian cars

well here are some pics if anyone is interested................
