So I'm having a huge problem with oil and my car. It seems to like to **** it out.

So here's the deal. I'm accelerating to get onto the freeway and my car is just POURING out white smoke from the oil that's burning out. Now I'm thinking too much pressure and it's shooting out of the valve cover gasket. My dad was trying to tell me it's coming out of the PCV valve but there's a LOT of smoke, so much that it makes me think oil is pretty much pouring out onto something hot. Also, it only does it when the car is moving, I can hold it at like at high revs when the car is stopped and not see a drop of oil come off.

So causes? Since it's on the side of the PCV valve I'm thinking incorrect PCV valve? I got it from a performance shop because i was there picking up ****ty stamped valve covers (should i swap for cast, or is that not part of the problem).

Also, could excessive blowby be causing an increase in pressure? I know my car is running kind of rich but I also need to rebuild my carb :-/ I don't have the time to do that at this point though, and it's also unrelated to my stupid oil problem.

Also of note, if i were to replace the valve cover gaskets it would be like the 5th time in a year or so. (and they all basically blew soon after i installed them. Now statistically I should've gotten it right by now, even if i do **** up everything So I'm thinking there's been some type of ongoing thing. Let me know if you need to know anything else.

Engine:
rebuilt 79 mustang 5.0
stock rotating assembly, heads, block.
aftermarket cheap valve covers :-/

thanks, alex

Are you sure it's white, and not blue? White says coolant all over it.

It stinks of burnt oil. I've burnt enough to know... :-/ Not sure if that's a good thing.

pcv valves aren't too high, so you might as well replace it if you suspect it might be the incorrect one. Maybe try getting one from ford. Also, I'm not familiar w/ the pre 87 5.0's, so if there's a grommet below your pcv valve, you should replace that too....if that were clogged and not letting your crankcase pressure escape, then it would escape from alternative places (seals, etc).

What kind of valve cover gaskets are you getting? I get the blue fel-pro ones w/ the metal on the inside...they're like $35 or so if I remember correctly, but worth it if you ask me. I just looked in my summit catalog for the part number and it only shows ones for $11-12 bucks made of cork..these are definately not cork...Just go to autozone and ask for valve cover gaskets for your motor and they'll give you choices and I think these might be the heavy duty ones....that is if that's where you think it's leaking.

White=Burning Coolant
Blue=Burning Oil

Are you sure there is no oil anywhere that you can see? Of course when you're moving, oil blows, so it could be leaking from a seal or something and then blowing onto your exhaust.

If it's coming out of the PCV valve, make sure you have your PCV filter screen present, a good PCV grommet, and a good motorcraft PCV valve and that will help out your situation.

When I popped my hood i found oil on the top of the valve covers and on the brake booster and fuel lines, and the clutch cable. So I kind of think PCV valve but that's a LOT of oil. Like Clouds of it. my heads are at spec and i don't see anything physically wrong with them. My valve cover gaskets if anything are leaking from excess pressure. I'll head out and pick up a new one i suppose.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks thus far guys.

Do you have aftermarket valve covers that require a push in cap? If so ensure that the grommet is secure and that you are using a cap designed for a closed crankcase, not a breather cap. I can send you a link for a good one if you are using a breather. Also ensure that the oil baffle under the cap is in place.

Open air breather on one side, PCV on the other.

That's open breather is a big vacuum leak, so replace it with the cap pictured below, part # M-6766-D302 from fordracingparts.com this cap has a built in oil baffle and a port to hook the PCV tube to the air inlet or throttle body depending on the year.

Well the only issue with that is that i only have one port for a PCV valve and it's the one on my carb... :-/ Ummm also don't i WANT to get rid of the excess pressure if that's what's blowing out my gaskets? Could this be excessive blowby?

Quick question, what did the stock oil cap look like, was it an open element or closed? I thought '79s had closed crankcases like the '84s I've seen.

my car is doing the same exact thing under hard acceleration. My PVC is poppin out and oil is coming out and getting on my exhaust. At that point smoke pours inside the cockpit! Of course I pull over stop, and replace my PVC back down in its propper place and all the smoke stops, until I get a wild hair and floor it again. It looks white to me too, and smells of burn oil. I was also wondering if it wasnt a blow by problem.........causing the excessive pressure in my crankcase?

I really dont guess it matters in my case, (to much) as I will be replacing the engine soon with a newer used explorer engine.

good luck and keep me posted on what you find wrong!
thanks
Jack
