i cant believe they told you 15 hours for a cam swap. thats insane. i would say 6 would be the max but a pro should be able to get it done in about 4 hours.

Well I just talked to the other guy and he quoted me $900. And then he gave me this schpeal about, "and that's the price if everything goes as it should." WTF anyone know of any good shops in South Central PA that doesn't want to bend me over for a cam install?

Most shops go to "the book." You open the book, go to the job, and the book will say how many hours it will take. Shop manager then takes the hourly rate, multiplies by what the book says, and bang, there's your price. I've never heard of a shop charging by the job type. Even the 900 dollar quote is some assumed hours times and hourly rate.

15 hours does seem excessive, I think 10 hours for a pro shop speciallizing in mustangs is more then reasonable. It doesn't get much easier then wrenching on a 302....

have you consdiered a small shot of nitrous? it would probobly cost less then the cam plus labor when all said and done and give you alot more power.

I have considered that, but I want a car that has the power there when I want it. Plus besides running colder plugs, what else would I have to do to the engine? Wouldn't I need to get a tune after installing it? My last tune ran me $300

I also thought about going the aluminum head and better intake route, but I already have around 300 at the flywheel. I couldn't justify all that cost to pick up 50 horses. If I had to spend all that money I would just go with a 6-8 psi supercharger, which I still might. I might only pick up 15 hp with this cam, but at least I'll have a better setup to supercharge in the future.

not sure if you would need a retune or if you could just retard the timing. i run the autolite 103's which are 2 steps colder and 13* with 93 octane. the car doesnt really suffer N/A. you can run alot more than a 50 shot. i have a buddy with a bolt on 93 cobra runnning 11.7's on a 175 dry shot. im running 150 now but no new numbers yet.

That is very impressive. I didn't know you can run that much on a stock motor. I guess I'm just gun shy about playing around with the stuff. I just don't know enough about it.

For you guys that have the Crane 2031 how does it sound at idle? I tried to find some sound clips but I didn't find any. Did you loose a lot of low end torque with this cam?

I called the guys at Don's Performance Corner today about installing the cam. They did my dyno tune and are very friendly and helpful. They own and maintain a Prostreet Trans-am and clearly know their way around an engine. I'm waiting on a price and should have it tomorrow. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Thanks again for all the advice and help.

I definitely didn't lose much if any low end torque. Here's an idle video

Hey, only an hour away! Did you have work done there?

Your only 30 minutes from them and never heard of them? Thats weird.
I had them tune my car for me a few times as many guys have. They were formerly Kauffman Motorsports. They do great work, and there close, give em a ring!

Actually I did say an hour away. And that's only because I could do about 70-75mph on 81 to get there. But no, I never heard of them. Thanks, I'll give them a ring after work.
