I am considering purchasing/upgrading my ignition box to the crane HI-6 ignition box (P/N 6000-6440) and either the Crane PS-92 or LX92 coil. I currently have the MSD 6AL box. At least in my eyes I think its an upgrade. I'm running nitrous - currently a 100hp shot and soon a 150hp shot and wanted to know if this box will be better for nitrous and street performance when compared to the MSD box.

1. What do you guys think? - Should I do it or not.

2. Have there been any consistent problems with the Crane boxes? If so what are/were the problems.

3. Is a digital box any better than an analog box? If so what are the differences.?

4. Does the Crane box have an rpm output plug for tachs, window switches etc similar to the MSD boxes?

5. Should I use the Crane PS92 or LX92 coil and are they direct fits?

Please provide any insightful information to help me decide whether to scrap the MSD 6AL for the Crane HI-6 box

Thanks for any insightful information

I just put in a 6000-6440 and can tell you it does have the tach hookup, window switch hookup and I think a timing retard hookup. As well as an adjustable rpm limiter (no pills). I did it b/c I got a really good deal on in but cannot talk to it's realibility or advantages over analog.

I also picked up the Ford TFI harness adapter to make the install that much easier (no wire harness cutting). I am still running the MSD coil (stock replacement).

The Crane website had install directions (Adobe files) specific to most cars and it shows all the different aux hookups that came on the 6440

might also want to look into the mallary box's they are/were running a "dead or alive" special. You get credit for trading in your MSD box for a mallary.

My 6al shot craps a few months ago and I am in the market for a new box myself.

I run a crane hi-6 and lx92 coil. Been running it for 4-5 yrs now. Its been problem free so far. The crane has many more features that makes it nice. These include rotary switches for adjusting the rev limiter on the box (adjustable in 100 rpm increments) so you dont have to buy "rpm pills" and it has a diagnostic light to help troubleshoot problems related to the ignition box. I havent needed the second feature yet (knock on wood) but its nice to know you have it if you need it. And yes it has a tach output wire.

Also, the lx-92 is a nice very powerful coil. i havent been able to overheat it yet. Its prolly a bit excessive for the street but it may be good for your spray. I run N/A so I know its excessive for me but I got it for free with my box (it was a sale deal on summit at the time). Its not a direct fit but if you drill a few holes in the stock coil bracket you can mount it to it just fine (its really easy).

So in conclusion YES!, I recommend Crane over Might Suddenly Die...:D

Sorry I missed you had an MSD already. Yes the crane box is nicer but its not worth any performance gain. I would keep the crane in mind for when/if the MSD ever fails. But dont just buy one to replace a working msd one.
