well, no use replacing the PIP... my dizzy's gone out the window.

there's a lot of play in the shaft, so i guess it's probably best to replace the whole thing entirely.

gonna search through the classifieds--if anyone one finds anything, i'd appreciate you letting me know. thanks for the help, again.

Paul, I'm with you. If the shaft has lots of run-out (bad bushing), toss it. It will just eat a new PIP (you might find ferrous material in the bowl of the dizzy if there was interferance).

There was a guy on the Corral within the last week selling a 94-95 MSD with low miles (reportedly) for around 150 bucks but I think it might be long gone (hardly anyone actually closes the ads after they sell something so it's hard to know). Were it me, I'd just get a parts store POS with a lifetime warranty. Look for a new PIP on the parts store dizzy (with many reman's, they test the core and if the PIP is okay, they leave it. A tell is seeing a second hole where the roll pin goes. REmember that I said it's hard to align it? The reman's often dont bother realigning it and just drill a new hole).

Good luck bud.

i noticed some thin metal shavings floating around when i sprayed the PIP w/ electrical cleaner--my dizzy's pretty much a metal maraca by now, lol.

i'll be out of town for the next few days--i'm on spring break and don't work this week so i'm gonna head up-state to take care of some wedding plans/details and house sit for my sister-in-law.

eager to get the car back on the road so i'm working on getting a dizzy by the time i get back. thanks for the help, JT!

i got mine from a parts store w/warranty for less then 100. dont forget to take the little plastic cap off the top of the dizzy if you go this route, it swaps onto the new one.

hey guys, just got back from out of town and made it home w/ a buddy's tfi module--did not fix it.

also put in a new coil (returned the one i had as "defected") and that didn't do it, either.

i think it's safe to say i pretty much narrowed it down to the dizzy/PIP. gonna try out a different distributor and see if that, or the PIP inside, helps.

Special tool $50
PIP (fill in) ?
time and aggrav. lots

The new distributor (less than $100) will be cheaper and new in the end.

Where can we get a new dizzy for 100 bucks? I'd totally be down with that!

The ones around here are reman'd and will sometimes even have the original PIP still in place (if it tested okay at the reman' factory, they reuse it).

hehe, i agree! my wallet's on empty, so anything under $100 is good with me!

i thought i caught a break--my buddy said he had one off his old 95 and was gonna let me have it for $60, but turns out he couldn't find it, so now i'm scavenging around looking for one.

Paul, a parts store reman'd unit should be under 100 bucks still. Check Autozone. You'll probably be supporting Vibe (A1 Cardone Unit) if they stock it.

Good luck.

I got mine from Auto Zone and it was like $88. Something like that.

I think it was a reman though. But it looked brand new.

progress!!

got a dizzy from a buddy and i tested *it* by connecting the harness at the dizzy, unplugging the coil, and spinning the dizzy w/ the key on and heard the injectors firing.

my buddy (who is a professional mechanic and a damn good one) says that's how they test it out there at his shop and if that checks out, it should fire.

just waiting on the BIL to get here and help get the dizzy back in--i can't seem to get it to sit all the way down.

seems like it's finally gonna fire!

sweeeeet!! glad to report it finally fired!

drove it around the block a couple times, romped it a little and it didn't backfire.

we set the timing and all, but the idle's a little rough--gonna do the routine check-tps-voltage-clean-iac-and-maf thing tomorrow and hopefully that'll cure it.

i appreciate the help, once again, everyone. JT--i owe you, bud.

Great to hear it's running decently Paul - it will continue to smooth out I bet.
Time for a fun weekend/St Patrick's Day.
