I know a couple of you guys on here are in the medical field ..... so maybe you will know this.


What are the consequences of taking an antibiotic medicine that is expired? In particular, Augmentin (syrup version).

I'm pretty sure that it's antibiotic ability just declines over time, ie...it won't be as effective as it once was.

but I have no medical qualifications/expertise

Justin..............problem with using old/weakened antibiotics or not following the whole cycle is that the virus/bacteria may become immune to it and develop resistance to that antibiotic and create a different strain..............
call up the doc and have him prescribe a new one.

It all depends on how long past the expiration date it is. I believe the FDA regulation for medication expiration dates says that it's expired when it's at or below 90% of its original effectiveness. Maybe RC will happen across this thread to elaborate. Isn't he a pharmacist?

It won't hurt you but drakesdad is right. The reason they prescribe a certain amount of antibiotic is so that you take enough to kill the bug. So the question from your doctor should be why do you still have left over antibiotics, lol.

Oh no, lol. I'm not sick right now. I just had some left over & wondered if I should chunk it or not.



Smitty, the reason I have some left is becasue the doc gave me WAY too much. I know all the BS about taking it all, but I was taking it for like a month, lol. I was better in the 1st few days. So finally I said screw it & stopped taking it.

As some of these meds expire, can't the chemical make-up of the med change as well? I thought I once read that, but I don't know what family of drugs it pertained to.

my wife is a nurse , she said don't take it cause it can give you the ****s and stomach cramps. and what everyone else already said.

It's liquid not syrup. Won't be effective and possibly diahhrea.

Haha, what's funny is the tech that gave it to me is who called it syrup. So I followed suit, lol.

There is a neet-O book out there you might be able to pick up that lists drugs and what issues come about from exp. meds as well as the chem. make-up does. You will prob. have to find someone who is a doctor or in medschool (maybe pharm. school also) though as IIRC its not something you can order at your local narns and bobal.

The REAL biggie is with pain killers and opium(sp?) based pain killers as they get really funky and can cause death after like 90 days past exp. date in some cases.

You were really close - Physicians Desk Reference. It is a reference guide for Rx drugs.

There are a few comprehensive drug books out there but it might be a PDR you used.
