crush sleeve ? (pinion seal install)

I just got the new pinion seal seated and I was told that I was going to need this crush sleeve but i have no idea where it goes. I didnt see it when i took the the pinion bolt off and haynes manual mentions nothing of it. Am i good to go ahead without the crush sleeve? Thanks in adavnce!

you NEED a new crush sleeve.. its stil in your rearend if you didnt find it.. it goes on the frint side of the pinion after the pinion bearing ( the Yoke side).. you need from the bumper pinion gear, pinion bearing, race (on the outside of the housing) race, bearing, crush sleeve, yoke... crush sleeve is very important!!!!! you need a needle torque wrench to set the preload before you finish..


what exactly are you doing with the rear end??

I am replacing the pinion seal ( old one was leaking). I have the pinion nut and and companion flange off now.

yeah i'm pretty sure your going to have to put the ass end up on jackstands to install the crush sleeve.. the haynes manyal should tell you the specs on the pinion preload.. but oy uneed the dial wrench to set it right..


psst.. if it were me i would just put the flange nut on there with the old crush sleeve real tight like, i'm talking like 30ft.lbs and call it good.. but that might just be my $60 bar tab talking.. CHIME IN STANGNET!..

Ive got it up on jackstands now haha. And I did go ahead and snug it down then realizing that i didnt even use the sleeve.......here is what I saw with the pinion nut off right before I put the new seal on.

If you're just replacing the seal you don't absolutely have to replace the crush sleeve. Doing so requires the axles to be removed and the diff carrier to come out. Kinda involved and nasty for just a seal...

If you measured the torque required to turn the pinion before removing the pinion nut, you could reassemble it and tighten the nut until you see that, or slightly greater, preload torque.

If you didn't record the preload prior to disassembly, you'll just be guessing and should probably take it all down to put a new one in.

awesome yeah i have the preload it was at 9 lbs which is in the the ok range in the haynes manual. I just second guessed myself when i didnt see the sleeve int he first place. thanks for the help!

Yeah it does!!! lol...you definitely don't wanna wear clothes you want to keep after handling that stuff.
