I thought maybe some of you could help me out.
I've been thinking about buying a 5-speed Mustang GT for a long time now. I can get it on X-plan, which I understand has a certain formula that gets you down around invoice price. That would save me maybe $2,000 or so. I know there is some cash back now, and in response to an earlier thread I posted most people said I could expect to pay X-plan and still get the cash back. There seemed to be some uncertainty about whether you could get the cash and the low-interest financing, I'll have to find out about that.
I had been thinking maybe $3,000 off MSRP between X-plan and the $1,000 cash back, but I was passing a Ford dealer in a nearby town this evening and swung through to see what they had in stock. The dealer had two silver GT's, both automatics, with a tag hanging inside each showing a "clearance" price of just under $5,000 off sticker on each! I know there is a some extra cash back on an automatic, but I was still surprised. One of the cars stickered for $30,800 and the tag inside said $25,900.
I don't mind paying a fair price, but like anyone I don't want to pay more than I have to. Should I be looking for a better deal than $3,000 off sticker? Or was this dealer unusual in discounting so much? I'm trying to get an idea of what a fair price would be for a 5-speed that stickers at just under $31k.
