Custom rear seat delete for a hatchback *idea*

Hey guys. I've been toying with the idea of removing my rear seat in my stang. It's pretty useless, I'm lucky if someone's back there three times a year. Anyway, the one thing holding me back is the fact that there aren't any good looking delete kits on the market for a hatch. All the ones I've seen are just some carpet stretched from where the seat was to the floor, like a tent, and they look hack to me. What I was thinking was to get some styrofoam sheets used for insulation at Home Depot, and making my own. I could take the sheets and contour them to the shape of the seat well, until I reached the height of the trunk floor. Once it's all filled in, I could cover it with some carpet, either the grey like the rest of the car, or black like most notch seat deletes (I like this, it makes it obvious and looks cool for some reason). Anyway, this way instead of the "tent", I'd have a nice clean edge, and it'd be made of styro, so it'd be super light, and it's pretty strong too. What do you guys think?

if someone crawlledo n it it would dent it and possably crack it

This styro is already compressed, and it would be a solid brick, with no space underneath, so there'd be no room for compression and cracking. My cousin and I built a fishing igloo for ice fishing out of plywood, and lined the inside with two layers of the stuff, and when we climbed in there were no problems. Biggest danger would be sharp edges gouging it, and I never haul stuff in the stang.

I'll probably do it in a few weeks, once the 5 lug is done, and the snypers are on. That, or if I get bored next week....any more opinions?

I was thinking about doing a rear seat delete as well, but I probably won't for a while. I would want mine to basically extend from the hatch and be flat so I could haul stuff in there if I wanted to and give more room for a stereo system, etc.

That idea does sound very good... it's something alot of owners can benefit from if it is successful

i just took the back seat outta my 86 and just left it empty, didnt try to cover anything up at all. haha

i've already removed the rear seat too... my friend and i are working on making a box, pretty much, with a lid that i can put stuff into so my tools, shop manual, etc... aren't just hangin out on the floor.

i made a post a few weeks ago about my seat removal in a hatch. i took the seat out, and just covered it in grey carpeting.

just covered what the seat didnt anymore, a small section where the backs of the seats were and underneith them. i set both of my amps where the seats were and my 6x9's in boxes in the middle of it.

i used to have them sitting behind the rear seats in the hatch area, now they are hidden just as well down low behind my seats. they dont get hot at all like they used to either.

all the wiring was hidden behind the carpet and sent down the door panels. its a decent amount of weight dropped too if your into that. the seats themselfs dont weigh all that much, but the seatbelts, all the brackets and the hatch vinyl cover all add up to around 40ish pounds i would say.

Well, I haven't gotten around to it yet. I pulled the lower half of my back seat, and layed the top down, and looked at it. I was thinking if I'd really like the look. Part of me says "hell yeah, race car", but the other half says it looks too empty, hollow, and long. I'd be all over it if I had a cage (one day, I will...) and some racing seats, but I think a nice subwoofer box could fill the gap nicely, as would a battery relocate with a nice stainless steel box toward the rear. I also realized that the whole carpet will need to be replaced, because part of it is attached to the little plates that go down with the seat. My carpet is ripped anyway, so I'm not worried about that. I've been really busy lately, installing an A/C delete, gauges, valve covers, and getting ever closer to doing the brakes and snypers, which should go on next week. I'm thinking of doing this in a few weeks if it's going to get done. Can anyone post some pictures of hatchbacks with different seat deletes? I want to get some idea of what the car will look like with an open rear.

yeah post up some pics i am very interested.... forgive my pun but i love to haul ass, just not other people's....haha in other words like someone else said,"lowered stangs with 4 people = i would definetly do this to rid myself of the free ride friends

Yeah, well, no one ever rides in the back of the stang, it's too tight. Also, my MSD box is under my seat, so I wouldn't want a passenger to kick it. On top of that, it's dead weight, and I just ditched my A/C system to drop pounds, the spare tire is out, so the seats should go. Last but not least, the back seats serve no purpose to me personally, because there's no way to get busy in the back of a stang. it's too damn tight.

i have done it as i mentioned before.

i did pretty much what your thinking. removed seats, covered the gap with grey carpeting. i put my two amp's where the seats were, and for now set my 6x9's in a pillar shape right in the middle. i hid all my wires, and have 2 10" subs in the back. i also have corbeau racing seats, and i'm really happy with the look.

keeps my amp's cool, people don't see the stuff, sound is better, and the car feels smaller without the seats being right there actually.

ill go snap some pics in our garage, its dark is the only problem. i'll see what i can get though.

here are my amp's and 6x9's. i haven't gotten around to putting black wire covers on the wire you can see. i'm also getting one big piece of grey carpet instead of the one i added to fill the gap. you get the idea though.
