cutting front springs

Help! I just removed the front springs to cut 1/2 coil off, and I thought I was supposed to cut off the top, but the top of the spring is rounded and flat with a dead coil; wheras the bottom of the spring ends sharp and looks like the natural choice for where to cut....anyone know for sure?????

Well I did a forum search, and after reading 1/2 ton of crap that had nothing to do with my question.,...here is the answer, cut from the bottom on the fronts, and off the top on the rears

Though I am sure the baby jesus wept at any number of things that would be considered silly, I doubt he shed a tear over my springs
And the only reason we clipped a 1/2 coil off the fronts is because ford racings engineering dept said it wouldn't damage the ride characteristics.

+1. The springs that came with my car were cut, and the car was unstable at best over bumps. Don't cut the springs, if you really need more drop, pull the isolators, and if you need more, installing extended balljoints will drop you another 1/2".

I cut a half coil off the bottom of my tokico springs after no more than a month. The fronts are linear so it doesn't really matter if you cut them, only height changes. Lowered the front of my car perfectly.

Quit freaking the guy out you clowns! Cutting half a coil isn't going to degrade ride quality to any great extent and you know it (or perhaps you don't?)

Any major drop should be done with proper lowering springs, but cutting a half a coil or a coil off of a set of stockers isn't going to hurt anything.

Unless you keep the spring cool during the cut, the heat will ruin the temper in the spring. Don't matter about how much you cut, its the heat plan and simple.

ya dude, cuttin spring is baaad idea. If you can't afford new springs, then you should just leave it alone until you have enough money to buy something like FRPP C spring. Christ they are like $120 for set...

You're not making sense?!? How does that make me wrong? Where did you hear me mention anything about heating up the springs. Anytime I've cut them off, it was with a dremel and a cut off wheel. Whatever minimal heat it did make, didn't feed any further than about an inch past the cut....and even then it wasn't anything hot enough I couldn't hold with my fingers.

It's both. But there's a "dead coil" that doesnt affect the spring rate and it's okay to cut it off. Now if you cut off more than the "dead coil", the spring rate will be messed out, and make your vehicle potentially dangerous.

i dont know if its bad or good heard both on this forum but he just wants to know where to cut them he never asked about the ride quality im not being a jerk or anything (well not trying to be ) but like you said above if it doesnt work or he doesnt like them c springs are mad cheap and he can buy new ones.

Actually smart ass....nobody made mention at all about heat. You were the only one who brought it up.....which is a valid issue, but not the one at hand. It's pretty common sense that heating a spring would compromise it's structure, so cutting it with a torch is out of the question....perhaps you yourself just learned this and wanted to share. How nice of you.
