4.6, 5.0, 5.7, 1345.0, it makes no difference. a pulley wont "harm" and "break" stuff in your engine.

Is that a fact......please read the above post.

Granted, I personally don't think that UD pulleys have as much of an adverse affect on a basically stock engine, that doesn't see a lot of high rpm, or is under constant load, but stock 4.6L oil pump gears might as well be made of chalk anyway and are affected to a certain extent by engine harmonics....which are only compounded with heavy mods or rough usage. I've heard more than one set breaking and taking the engine with it, as where the old pushrod motors do not suffer from the same problem.

How does a smaller pulley make the crank rotate faster?????? It effects the OTHER pullies, not vice-versa. The crank pulley is what drives everything else.

I had Steeda UDs, and dyno'd 6HP/6TQ rear wheel net gain. I live in Texas (hot) and saw no cooling issues in the summer with the A/C on and stuck in traffic. I have the stock radio, and saw no charging issues either with the A/C on, and headlights.

My guages did not change whatsoever from where they stayed normally before the installation.

Sigh....forget it trinity gt. Some people just refuse to listen to any thing that wasn't printed in MM&FF.

If you guys still don't get it, why don't one of you post a thread title like "Can underdriven pulleys lead to oil pump gear failure on a 4.6L?".....then see what kind of responses you get!

On 4.6 mod motor, the pulley and damper are integral. All of the UDPs I've seen have pulleys that are not separable from the damper except in one case (I'll get to in a second.) In fact, if you look at the serpentine belt routing on the 4.6 you'll see that the pulley is next to the timing cover and the damper ahead of it; on the 5.0L motor, the arrangement was reversed allowing the pulley to be bolted to the damper. Maybe this is what you're thinking...

You can't get UDPs on the 4.6 without doing something about the damper. In the case of the March "piggyback" pulley the crank pulley does not actually have a damper. The factory damper and pulley assembly is bolted to the front of the March pulley and the crank bolt holds the whole assembly together. The UDP drives the accessories slower and the mass of the factory damper is still there.

I guess it could be said that ANY mod can adversly effect your car.

I was lucky and had no problems with any of my mods.

But there are some that put on longtubes and have fits.
Some put on plenums and the car doesn't run right.
Some put on pulleys and screw up the pump gears.

Did the mod to the damage, or a muffed installation job? Most of us would never know. Maybe the mod just amplified an existing condition.

I guess it could best be summed up as "Modder Beware".

i dont want to hear any wise cracks from you or anyone else f**kbag. i'll answer someones question or correct someone without wise cracks. saying a pulley hurts the crank/oil pump is like saying running the engine without the belt on is gonna hurt the crank/oil pump. only thing thats gonna hurt is the engine once it overheats because the water pump isn't turning, which is not the point of this analogy.

Listen @$$hat, I wasn’t singling you out in particular, so STFU. You don’t have to agree with our point, but you sure as hell don’t have to be a jerk-off about it either. You haven’t begun to see me make smart-@$$ed remarks yet, so with that being said, if I want any more lip from you, I’ll rattle my zipper! It’s funny how you call me names, then pull off a high and mighty attitude by stating how you’d answer someone else’s question and correct them without wisecracks, when in you’re very next post you just called tomustang’s comment “rediculous and extremely laughable”! Please refer to www.followyourowndamnadvice.com …..and BTW, you spelled ridiculous incorrectly.

I’ll say if for you again, seeing as how you missed it the first time around. Running U/D pulleys are not a guarantee of engine failure. As it has been stated many times in this thread, some have been using them for years without problem. I personally don’t think that it’s really a big deal for a stock or modest bolt on engine that’s not going to be seeing any time past the stock red line. However…as you may or may not know Modular engines are in fact internally balanced. Not only that, but as shown in the picture a few posts previous, the oil pump is located and used in direct relation to the crank shaft with their application. As such, altering the “dampner” on the pulley end of this crank shaft does have some (even a miniscule) negative effect on the engine harmonics. The harder and further it revs, the more detrimental are its effect. If that weren’t bad enough, the oil pump gears on a modular engine are made of bean counter powdered metal and have a tendency to break under excessive engine harmonics, load and undue stress. Hence all of the busted oil pump gears we keep hearing about and the availability of billet gears as a replacement. Again, I’m not saying that oil pump failure is a guarantee with pulleys, but it is in fact a reality. A reality that anyone who’s considering doing any serious modifications to a modular engine, should consider during a build up!

Is that a clear and concise enough point?
