Ok guys, I've got a problem on my hands. Let's see if anyone can help diagnose it. I keep hearing a crazy knock at idle. I think I have a rod knocking. I popped the hood and while the car was running, I put my head in the bay and it was coming from around the block. I'm gonna be one pissed off dude if this crap is true. This is just my self diagnoses. I'm gonna talk to my mechanic and see if he's got something to say. So, everyone, I'm collecting money, so give me your 2 cents.

Look and see if the tensioner is moving back and forth a bit. It'll make a knocking sound every once in a while, maybe a lot, if it's going bad.

I had a knocking sound coming from the engine bay once and it ended up being the POS stock balancer. Got it replaced and no more knocking sound.

You sure it's not a lifter or rocker arm making that knock? Don't mistake a tap for a knock...

Anyway, if it is a rod knocking, don't be "one pissed off dude." Be happy; it's an excuse to buy a stroker!! A nice 331 or 347 would make a wonderful replacement for a lil' 302. Or just get another 302 and put some Edelbrock or AFR 165 heads on it!

well hes just a kid, he prob doesnt have the money for a 331 or 347. The whole point of him being pissed is that he may not have the money just to fix a busted rod if it is that. Alot of us use broken stock parts as an excuse to put on more powerful and expensive aftermarket parts but sometimes that sisuation is not very realistic.

Ditto...mine was doing this same thing and produced a loud and ugly metallic knocking sound.

It should go away once you start driving and the engine smooths out though...at idle there is a lot of shaking and thus where it is hitting.

Not to hijack the thread, but...
I've never heard of the tensioner making a knocking noise. How loud is it??? The reason I ask- My friend just built a 306 when he cranked it up there was no oil pressure ran for a total for maby 2 minutes, between stops and starts. Turns out it was an oil gallery plug by the dizzy. Well he figured that out and put it back together. Got done setting the timing and went to hit the key to fire it up to if the oil pressure prob was fixed. Well he left the socket and rachet on the balancer and it hit the tensioner. It put a good size dent in the pullie. Now when he cranks the car up it makes a TERRIBLY loud knocking noise. He has flowmasters and an e cam and its hard to hear the exhaust over this noise.

Hell I'm 23 and have been through a divorce already. Don't think I don't know about money issues!!

Still, I always find a way to get what I want. Always. I don't have a lot of extra money right now either, but if I threw a rod tomorrow you better believe that what's going back in the car is better than what came out. But some people are satisfied with what they had and I can understand that. Performance just isn't a big priority for some people, and that's cool.

Thanks for the offer. Were going to take the belt off and crank it up tommorow. If it keeps doing that noise, the motor will be getting dissasembled out of the car tommorow! He's got way, way to much money in this motor.

The balancers a piece of cake to change if you have the right tools. You may need an impact to get the bolt off. Then you will need a special tool to get the balancer off, and a different tool to press the new one back on. You can rent or buy these at most auto parts stores. Check the front seal if it looks good dont worry about it, its a PITA change the seal. I'd also make sure the crankshaft keyway is in good condition, mine broke on my 87 thats why the balancer had back and forth play.

I already had the general idea but that is what I thought. I don't have air tools but I will have a buddy of mine put it on.
