Dash Lighting Problem

Well first off I have two gauges Im trying to fix (engine temp and tach). Also none of my dash lights (gauges, ac/heat, radio is unhooked) will illuminate. Ive checked the fuse and bulbs and they seem to be ok. I removed the instrument cluster (2 wire harnesses and speedo cable...is that all that should be there?). Please help if you have any ideas. Thanks.

maybe your dimmer switch went out?

make sure you can see a voltage change in the output from the dimmer

This is a good place to start checking.. You can try to wiggle the knob to see if the connections are bad or break out the DMM (Digital Multimeter) and start tracing the power source to see where your problem is.

Sroth is right on. Just like with an old radio with a spinner volume knob, you can run the rheostat up and down several times to get the 'static' out.
