Daytime Running Lights

Hi everyone,

So I just got my car back from the safety inspection - it needs the rear hatch lift supports and the daytime running lights don't work.

They said it was most likely the module. Is this a common issue? The part seems a bit pricey and I would hate to order one and find out this issue is usually caused by something else.

Part two of the module question - is this or can this also called a relay or is there a difference between the two? On Rockauto the "module" (AIRTEX / WELLS 6H1475 {#DRM103, F43Z15A272A}) looks exactly like a "relay" (STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS F03001 TechSmart) and are almost the same price.

If they are the same then I can get the relay and have it ship from the same place as the trunk supports to save some money.

The module is located inside drivers fender near the horns. Removing the fender liner should give you access

as to how to test, no clue really. My wiring diagrams are for 87-89 so will need someone with the 90+ diagram to chime in. You don't happen to have a 1990 EVTM handy do you?

Gonna look at mine to see if they address this module

Edit: nope. Doesn't even mention it

I unfortunately don't. I did just go have a look at it. The previous owner had said that he seasonally used WD-40 on some under carriage bolts and some kind of spray on stuff to coat it and protect the underside. The module (and the horn for that matter) do have a coat of something wet looking on them. I at first thought that maybe some of that got in there and shorted out the part, but that doesn't make sense - the part is exposed to the weather so by that logic I would think it wouldn't make it through a drive through the rain either. It must be a sealed connection so the spray on stuff he used probably didn't cause the problem....

Looking at some running light kits to add to cars that don't have the system, it looks like thats really about all it is - the main module/relay and some wires to connect. Does that sound about right? It doesn't look like there are any other fuses or major components. I think it would be a lot more likely that the main piece failed rather than a bad wire or something. I went under there and tried playing with the connection and tapping on it hoping that would get them going at least for the safety but no luck. I think I will just order the relay and hope it all works out. Will let you guys know how it goes.

The guys at RockAuto confirmed that the module and relay are the same part and do the same thing. The order has been placed so hopefully that is indeed what the problem is.

I've never seen or heard of daytime running lights on a fox mustang.

Yeah, its some ridiculous Canadian thing. Apparently any car after December 1989 needs them, which makes it suck even more in my case with the car being a 1990....

Explains why I don't see mention of it in my '88 wiring diagrams.


I'm surprised I haven't seen someone try adding those LED DRLs to a fox yet. I'm talking about the strips on the bumper.

DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS
FWIW: That plug is for the Canadian Daytime Running Lights that only the Canadian cars use.
In Canada, any car built after Dec 1, 1989 was required by law to have Daytime Running Lights and rather than manufacturing 2 different wire harnesses Ford just made one and used a shorting plug on the US cars.
Meaning no car in the United States has the actual hardware/device/relay/solenoid or whatever it is that plugs into that, to make the daytime running lights work and the reason the plug is not connected to anything.

Daytime Running Lamps


Canadian Vehicles Only

The Daytime Running Lamp (DRL) system is designed to turn the high-beam headlamps of the vehicle ON, with a reduced light output, and without illuminating the high-beam indicator in the instrument panel when the following conditions are met:

l The ignition switch is in the RUN position.

l The parking brake is fully released.

l The headlamp system is in the OFF position.

The DRL system incorporates a module and bracket assembly located under the LH fender apron, directly below the battery. The wiring is connected to the 14401 wiring assembly, and is routed through a hole on the apron vertical face in front of the washer reservoir. The DRL output cannot be measured using most multi-meters, nor can the DRL module be adjusted.
