ok my dd is a 95 s-10, 4.3 with a 5 speed.
truck runs great most of the time

a while back i got a check engine light on the interstate. for about a min or 2 and it went off.

since then my truck may die upon start up every once in a while. not every time. maybe 1 in 5 times.
it will start and surge and die.

i had the codes scanned and nothing came up

then today i was sitting for a while and i started the truck. the engine surged REAL LOW like it was loading up and i smelt fuel.

then it smoothed out after a min or 2

i was pressing the gas alot while the truck was off so i thought maybe that did it. since its TBI but it didnt seem right.

truck ran smooth. then it sat again for an hour and then i did it again. surged and smelled fuel it was idling real low and shaking like it wanted to die
then smoothed out after a min and then drove flawlessly home.

its been sitting for 2 hours and i just started it up. ran fine... started right up and idled perfect!

only thing i ahve done is put a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in but i highly doubt that has anything to do with it.

any ideas?

probably not... if you go to someone like advance or somebody to do a free one (free scan) then they only check it if the light is currently on most use and actron cp9145 which wont check stored codes, only active codes.

my s10 used to do that, then the fuel pump went out (not sure if the two problems were related) but after i changed the pump it has ran fine. i still smell gas from time to time though.

btw if you ever have to change the pump remove the bed, i spent 3 hours tring to get the tank out, and said f it and removed the bed (30min).

sell the truck while its running... fuel pumps are expensive for them things.

but... it mitght not be the pump and you wouldn't want to sell your truck because some guy on the internet told you to, right?

I did the pump in a 92 S-10 (4.3L) and the bed removal sentiments are about right. It was a pain to drop the tank (it was a full tank though). A Delphi pump was not expensive though.

If yours is the same induction set-up, it only uses about 14 PSI - a slight lack of pressure really makes a difference.

When I diagnosed the pump, I farted around with it idling and after run-time, the diaphram in the pump was getting hot and weak and it would start running rougher. Eventually, it would stall and no longer catch upon restarting (don't drive it far from home is the point).

Good luck.
