I know what you mean but I don't necessarily agree. Take Into Eternity. They're a band I speak highly of A LOT, and the first few times I heard them I couldn't even understand what I was listening to half the time. Now I know every note, and if I still played guitar I'd be jamming every one as well. BTBAM just didn't grab me the first times I listened to the album, and nothing was memorable enough to make me want to. If you know what I mean...

IMO, Death metal yells are great and low growls like Cannible Corpse are wasteful. I've heard plenty of songs by those kinds of brutal death bands (CC, Suffocation, etc.) where they'd be good if the vocals were...existing

As far as I know there isnt, but there is such thing as a drum machine which I would put money on no death metal band uses(atleast the ones I listen to). 99.9% of it is just hardcore double bass with either 2 bass drums or 1 bass and a double kick. I used both and I liked using the two bass drums instead of one with a double kick.

You can adjust the kick pedals to be closer to the drum head than normal.

And yes, most use a double-pedal system on one drum like:

I've always found double pedaling pretty easy to begin with, but keeping it up for a long time is another story!

I've seen those around - the one I'd like to pick up whenever I get my spare room cleared out enough for a drumset is the Iron Cobra ... pricey, but nicey - but I'm pretty sure there was some kinda device that was a bass-drum equivalent to "full auto" that I recall reading about. Basically, you stomped it to the floor and it just buzzed out whatever string of hits you wanted (16th, 32nd, or whatever). I'm sure it'd be frowned upon as "cheating" by most folks, but hey ... so is programming percussion into a drum machine or a modified loop track, and entire careers have been made outta that kinda music, so why not?

Besides, scrawny geeks like me could never find the time/energy/muscle to beef up enough to be able to play a good DM rhythm for more than two-thirds of one song. That's why I'm sticking to my lame efforts to brush up on guitar, keyboard, and track programming - technology in place of actual talent and skill.

if any of you guys are into double bass pedals you may or may not be familiar with a guy by the name of raymond herrera? drummer of fear factory. fear factory, slipknot, mushroomhead, korn, pantera, down. thats my kinda metal. yes the musicianship of lots of death metal is good but i jus cant take the jeese what do you even call it? grunting. its jus lame. i dunno. but i can deal with it. i surely hate rap so all you death metal guys can respect that.

I mentioned him earlier. Joey Jordeson in Slipknot is a badass too, IMO more talent than that band can use. Of course Vinny Paul in Pantera is a badass, he was fastest beat per minute in the Guiness BOWR in '96.

Funny thing, i'm probably the most musically diverse guy on here, i listen to rap too but very select artists and i don't put any money into it. I have friends who buy CDs and i pick through what i like and make copies. On a typical car drive i'll go from DMX to Slayer and back to Black Sabbath or classic rock.

Yeah more bands are singing like TTEOTD than the classic cookie monster stuff. That was back in the day. Also a lot of DM bands have discovered the rythm guitar and added lots of good rythm sections instead of just all crazy chaos.

I love Vinnie Paul. The drummer from Arch Enemy is awesome too, I saw 'em live last year and he did a tremendously impressive solo!

I like music from all over the spectrum as well. Rap included. DMX is really cool, I also was always into Dre, Snoop, Ice Cube, NWA, etc. I used to listen to Geto Boys and all sorts of that kinda stuff. Absolutely! If i'm gonna spend money on music then it's going to be the sickest, most ass ripping metal i can find at the moment, or i just don't buy anything. I almost bought the new Iron Maiden the other day but i'm waiting to hear it first. Music is a huge part of my life but the price of a CD is pretty crazy these days, i can't justify spending more on a CD than i make an hour at work and i don't like the idea of buying song at a time online. The cool thing is a listen to a lot of Christian hardcore stuff and they're usually cheaper at the Christian stores.

Christian "metal" = weak metal + even weaker lyrics. Just my opinion, though.

Y'know what I'd really like to see/hear someday? A good, quality metal band with the majority of its songs' lyrics focused upon cars. Maybe give it a cool name somehow associated with automotive parts or tools ... like Hypereutectic, Roller Lifter, Valve Lash, or Crush Sleeve. The obligatory music videos, alone, would be worth it.

Not everything has to be about death man! You have to listen to the right Christian bands. Go out and pick up Embodyment's first album called "Embrace the Eternal" and tell me that's weak metal

Demon Hunter is some pretty good Christian metal.

You know what's funny, I'm friends with a Priest who is into metal (he had a killer Mustang and is the reason I am into them, and we even met/are friends because of his!) and he LOVES the stuff I show him. Children of Bodom, Into Eternity, All That Remains, etc. LOVES it. I told him I had a Christian metal band I wanted him to hear and he was like "Nah, that stuff sucks!" When he heard Demon Hunter, he couldn't believe it. Now they're not the heaviest, most technical, or anything like that, but they are good and the songs are catchy.

ANother Christian metal band my friends love (I don't care for 'em) is Extol.

No, I was a guitarist for many years but I had a knack for learning...everything Guitar, bass, pedal steel, drums, drum machine programming, keyboards, piano, and some brass/wind from way back in the day.

I fronted a few bands (guitar/vocals) and often had drumsets at my house so I just learned, practiced, came up with drum beats for my drummer to go by, etc. It would be nothing for me to go in the music room and come out with a completely finished song, although I'd naturally hand it off to each other musician so they could put their spin on their parts. They knew what I was going for in their respective parts, and they always made it work. Half the time the bassist never changed a damn note! Lazy ass, lol.

Yeah i can't stand Extol. Living Sacrifice is some good stuff too, their album "The Hammering Process" is awesome. Right now one of the best CHC bands i think is Still Remains...they kick ass and their CD is just non stop ass ripping.

Another good Christian metal band is Mortification. More tight, uh, play-man-ship... anyway I was into them a few years back. I think as long as the music is good it doesn't matter what they are singing about. It's more about the overall sound.

Darkwriter - I think that would be cool to have a band that sang about cars, kind of like the Beach Boys of death metal or the Bolt Thrower for cars. (Bolt Thrower seems to specialize in singing about war).

There used to be a band about BMX back in the day...it was pretty cool. There's tons of rockabilly bands about cars but that's maybe not what you're looking for. Oddly enough a lot of Christian bands' lyrics aren't so obvious that they're constantly about GOD GOD GOD, usually they're about something motivational....and that's something i'd rather hear than some DM lyrics about mutilating babys and stupid crap like that. Who want's to have a song about death and torture stuck in their head all day?? The DM i do listen to, it's a good thing i can't understand the lyrics so that i just remember the music, since that's all i'm in it for anyways.
