Decodiing rear-end tag

Trying to see what gears are in the diff.

I know that in the old rears, the group of numbers in the lower left corner described the ratio, ring gear size, and posi/non-posi. Is there any similarity with the tags on the 8.8? My car has the tag still on it, and am hoping to be able to read it.

Look for a group of 4 digits

2L73 = 2.73's
3L08 = 3.08's
3L27 = 3.27's

That's about all that you would find on an '88 GT. All have trac-lok rears

i don't know about that, but you can throw the rear end up on jack stands and have someone rotate a wheel around one full turn, mark the driveshaft and count the rotations....however many times around is the gears you have....just under 3 full times is 2.73's, just over is 3.08's most likely, etc That's what I did.

I'll pull the tag tonight when I get home and post it.

I looked quick, but did not see numbers like described above, but parts of the tag are quite dirty.

Often, characters stamped to the tag are hidden beneath the bolt that's holding the tag to the diff. housing cover.
