The GT-350 was named "350" because it was approx. 350 feet from Carroll Shelby's office to the building where they built the Shelby Mustangs. But with the addition of the big block engine they had to designate the new GT. So, 500 was a nice round number.

Yea, Carroll was good at just pullin names out of hats. Shelby is said to have named the big-block version of the GT350 the 500 because it was a bigger number than anyone else's.
