I have put new 373 gears along with Eaton posi and all new bearings and 31 spline axles. I have never done this before but I have read a lot on it and have the tools to do it. Installing FRPP gears and the pinion depth according to the ProForm tool says the factory shim would be right depth. I then put the pinion assembly all together and torqued to 25 ft. lbs. with crush collar and all assembled. Next, used new carrier shims but same factory thickness as the old carrier shims. Backlash came out to be .010 which told me that the old and new pinion were the same thickness if the backlash came out the same as my factory gears at .010, RIGHT??? I then continued to torque down the carrier bearing caps and checked the wear pattern. And here is a pic. of what I got. What direction do I need to go? Also, if I need to add some shims to raise the pinion and make it go deeper into the mesh, it would not be much and how would adding .010 or somewhere along this to the pinion cause much affect or enough to get me where I need to be?

Am I where I need to be? I just dont feel this is correct.
And do you check the wear patter before torquing things down, and would this cause my problem with the looks of the wear pattern?

Everything I read says the heel to toe location is not as important as how deep or shallow the pinion rides in the ring. If mine is not good, how do I go about achieving desirable wear patter from where I am.

I've done this before and all the factory size shims came out correctly for me. I don't know gear wear patterns off hand, I went by the guides that came with the gears and bearing kit. I'm sure someone else can help here.

Everything needs to be torqued when you check it and I think you are to tight on your pinion. It should be tourqued with inch pounds of drag on it. I don't have the number with me. Somebody here will know what it is. I have never had much luck with that marking paste. It is very difficult to see the pattern. Your backlash is fine at 10. I finally starting using a pinion spacer instead of the crush sleeve. I just used the ratech pinon setting tool and went with the measurement. Then shimmed it and put it together. It worked on both of my cars. Hang in there.
