I am looking for a manufacturer for a detroit locker for an 8". I have looked around but no dice. I don't really care who the manufacturer is. I heard bad things about the lock right, but if anyone has any experiences with those please tell. Thanks

Honestly, there isn't much available for the 8", it's really pretty weak comparatively. Look into an 8.8" or a 9"(best bet) and there is tons of stuff available for them. Look toward the 4x4 crowd for information on this.

Google produced a quick list of locking differentials. Here

Lockers are pretty funky, they will load and unload on you unexpectedly. If you are straight line racing, they kick ass, if you are gonna be making any turns, look for a selectable locker. ARB, Eaton, Electrac, and others make selectable lockers, and all can be converted to be a cable driven lock. ARB requires air, Eaton and Electrac both are electronically activated.

Detroits load and unload, under acceleration they are locked (loaded) and when you let off the accelerator (like in a turn) they unload, if you are driving hella fast, and rounding a turn, it can sling you into another lane. Pay attention.

Actually, with my locker experience I'd say they are EXTREMELY predictable... I know exactly when mine would lock or unlock, and that can be used to your advantage. They make the car understeer if you go into a turn locked but I never got into a situation where I felt that it was causing the car to be outta control, just a little bit of understeer even when I was running the hell out of it

Jason -

Are you running a true locker, or a posi-trac type of unit? A 'hard' locker like a Detroit will unload, they're the ones to look for. A posi unit is a bit different.

Just a standard Deroit Locker for a 9". Its the same design as the old ones but its been revamped so that its not as clunky as the older ones. When I go into turns with it locked I make a concious effort to not let it unlock, that way it just wants to plow a little.

Despite the 8" being so small it is pretty sturdy, and will easily handle the power I have. Besides that it is 100lbs lighter than the 9". So without replacing my rear end there is no detroit locker for an 8"?

OK, I gotcha now. (the 'soft' locker)

With the roll of big tires (35" and up) they will unlock on ya, but they can also on smaller street tires if you don't stay in the gas.

100Lbs is a pretty liberal estimate, but you may right about that, I always thought the 9" was pretty light, especially when compared to the likes of a Dana 60 or something.

Anyhow, here's a quick list of 8" lockers. Moser is excellent stuff. Look at Currie, and Randy's Ring and Pinion to have stuff too. Avoid Drivetrain Warehouse like the plague. Personally I buy that kind of stuff through a local shop, I am able to get decent service, pricing, and someone to cry to when it doesn't work like it should

Quick List

Detroit is a reputable manufacturer, and Jason seems to like his pretty well, and I really like them (but I do run 35" tires). You will have to adjust your driving style going from a open to a locked differential, things can get out of hand in a hurry if you don't pay attention. Auburn is good stuff, though they aren't real popular in the off-road market.

You may want to look into the Powertrax unit. It's a locker of sorts that takes the place of the spider gears. Its a very easy install actually. The only draw back is the clicking you hear from the racheting action on slow turns. I bought it from summit for like $400 i think.
