Did I just make the problem worst?

I haven't driven my 1967 mustang in two weeks. After warming up the car I began to turn the wheel and it was back to "NO" power steering. I knew I had a leak but always thought it was a small oil leak. I checked the power steering and it was empty. I had no other car available and decided to drive the car 4 miles with about 12-15 turns. I filled the revoir up and checked and everything was back to normal! I then parked at a store and saw a trail F#%$ck It was leaking the whole way! So what can I expect as the worst case scenario and what can I expect at the least? I'm leaving and don't get back after the weekend so I won't have time to investigated. Thanks

When you fill the pump back up and drive the car, does the pump whine or make noise that it didn't before?

If not, you may have had enough fluid in the pump (and driven the car so few miles) that it might be OK. If the pump now makes noise, you have burned up the campack inside the pump and possibly shed some metal from the pump into the rest of the system.

It did make a faint whine but went away. When I drive straight nothing and when making turns at 30+ a little noise. At 5 MPH it sounds horrible but that's after I leaked every where and probably near empty of power steering fluid. When I did fill it back up it was good as new but as it leaked the sound got worst.

If the pump is shot, can I just drive it without the power steering? And if I do have to replace the pump whats the average price and overall best pump for the money? Or can I just replace the campack inside the pump? Thanks everyone.
