I was wondering what the main difference was between the 96-98 4.6l and the 99-04 4.6l. What is it that gives the newer engine the added hp and tq? And is it an easy upgrade, or not really worth the money?

the 99+ have better tuning, heads, cams, and intake. plus more HP/tq . get the 97.

96-98 look the best.

Yeah I do like the look of the older mustang, but the main reason I was asking was, that recently I had to replace my original engine, and the shop put a 2000 in it, they used all the old parts from my 97 engine, and I found out that the block itself didnt have the addiotianal hp and tq. I was really looking forward to the added 45 hp and 15 tq, and was just wondering how easy it would be to upgrade it, and what new parts I would need.

umm...I dont know what a long block or short block is, but the engine is a 4.6l 2v from a wrecked 2000 mustang with 54,000 miles on it, if that helps any. I have a 97' that they put it in.

They have better cams...? That's the first I've heard that. I thought it was all heads and intake...?

Sounds like they used the 2000 short block and installed the original heads, cam and intake.

All you need for the swap are 99+ PI heads w/cams and intake abd you can get 260-265HP

Wait...so you had a 2000GT short block installed but have the non PI heads from your 97?

Ok, after doing some more reasearch, I'm starting to wonder if they really put a 2000 mustang block in it, and not just another 96-98 block. My car does have the non-pi heads in it, does this mean that it cant be a 2000 4.6l? I'm gonna go to the shop tomorrow and try to get the vin# from the mustang that he got the engine from. Is there a # on the engine anywhere, that I can match it to?

doesn't matter what shortblock you have, the power comes from the PI heads/cams/intake. Actually a shortblock from a 00 GT would give you less HP then the stock shortblock because the pistons have greater dish and lower the compression with NPI heads.

You should really try to find this out, especially if you ever decide to get it blown one day. But yeah, even if it is an NPI block, you'll come out better with the newer PI heads/cams/intake swap and get a tune on it. Be prepared to run a higher octane fuel (93+) if the block is NPI as the higher compression will require it.

Do y'all think I got any extra power from the newer block (that is if it does actually turn out to be a 2000, and not another 97') other than it just having lower millage?

NO if its a 2000 shortblock you will have lost power because of the lower compression!!!!!

I wouldn't say he's losing power. Hed just be on average with the rest of us 99-04 guys.

The bump in compression from using a 96-98 block only really gives you maybe 5HP tops.

Does anyone have any dyno sheets on a PI converted 96-98 with everything else stock? Curious to see how much more it does add.

are you sure bout that Bob? i know youre a genius and all, but i dont think i agree. dont the 96-98 GTs have the exact same block as the 00-04? i thought the only difference were the heads, cams, and intake, aside from COP and other misc things. the blocks should be exactly the same. all the shop did was take the bare block and assemble his old rotating assembly, heads, and intake. thats what i gleaned from his post

Pistons are different. This is where the CR changes. It has actually changed a few times. You have the 96-98, the 99-00 and the 01-04's which have 3 different CR's from the factory. The 01-04's are slightly higher than the 99-00's. Also, there were two different 99-04 engines, some built in Windsor Ontario and some in Romeo Michigan. They have slight differences.

i was assuming they took just the bare block from the '00 and used his old rotating assembly. we still arent sure exactly what they did. plus, is it even possible to bolt non PI heads to a romeo or windsor block? b/c bolting PI heads to the older blocks required adapter plates if im not mistaken

the NPI pistons are a 9-11 cc dish i think and the PI pistons are 16-18 cc dish so with a person using a PI shortblock and NPI heads (larger chamber volume) it would have the opposite effect of a PI head swap on a NPI block. The power loss isn't going to be huge but maybe 5-10 hp...but for a NPI GT to lose 5-10 HP sucks since its already down on power...Now the silver lining in this is now he can add a blower
