Well besides how much they displace. What are some major differences in these engines. 4.6's are modular? What does that mean exactly? Was just curious!

which 5.0?

If you mean the old 5.0 from the earlier fox bodied cars then ALOT is the best answer. Almost the same amount of difference as Tom Cruise is from Lizz Hurley.

The similarities - they both are produced by Ford, and both are internal combustion petrol engines.

5.0

push rod v8, ie cam shaft is in the middle of the engine, classic American design now only really continued by the Chevy LS1 block.

4.6

is a OHC, over head camshaft engine, meaining it has the cam(s) on top of the engine, the GT is a SOHC per bank engine and the Cobra's and Mach 1 use a DOHC per bank (or quad cam layout).

Modular stands for what it says - it is made of different modules so in theory you can pick and mix components such as block, heads, intakes, cranks, pistons, etc. It may also (need to check I know the new Jag AJV8 can) also allow different configurations of the block V6, V10 and V12.

the biggest difference is on stop light to stop light driving the 5.0 will feel more powerfull. On the high way a 4.6 will feel more powerfull

the 5.0's have a lot of down low torque but dont rev at all. they tend to fall on their face on the high way. However a 4.6 lives and thrives in the higher rpm range and will feel at home on the highway

That's a good summation above...thanks!

BTW, is the new 3.0 V6 that Ford is using in the 2005 V6 Mustang part of the "modular family"?

Nope, the new 4.0 V6 in the Mustang is the truck motor commonly used in the Ranger and Explorer. It is retuned for the Mustang.

http://bradbarnett.net/mustangs/timeline/05/05/v6.htm

The only "modular" V6 left in the Ford linup is the 3.0L Duratec used in the Taurus, 500, Freestyle and the Escape. Prior to that there was the 2.5L Duratec used in the Contour.

It says "The standard engine is a 60-degree 4.0-liter SOHC V-6" in that page you listed. If "modular" is in reference to it being OHC, then yes, it is. Ford had 2 different 4.0's they used in trucks, the OHV (push-rod) and the OHC.

IMO, it's a pretty good motor, but I'd never own a v6 mustang.

So...with a TIMELINE what horsepower was each generation year Mustang putting out?

I know the 05 GT has about 300HP STOCK
and 99-04 GT has 260 STOCK

How much HP do all the older GT's have? StocK

Dont the 99-04 GT's have more HP than the 5.0 GT's......?

Starting from the first Fox.....

1979 5.0L 142hp
1980 4.2L 119hp
1981 4.2L 120hp
1982 5.0L 157hp

1986 5.0L 200hp
1987-1992 5.0L 225hp
1993 5.0L 205hp (rating system changed....actual output still 225)
1993 5.0L 235hp Cobra
1994-1995 5.0L 215hp
1994-1995 5.0L 245hp Cobra

2003-2004 DOHC 305 Mach 1
2005 4.6L 3V 300hp

And that's not even including the 2.3 Turbo's.

Slightly less restrictive exhaust and a more aggressive ECU tune. The fuel system changed some what on the '98 model year as well, but it didn't really do anything for horsepower.

I believe the 4.0 V6 is actually a development of the old Cologne V6 as used in the Ford Capri's and Cortina's. If you look at a spec sheet for a new V6 it should say engine made in Germany.

I am sure this is not what you were ment when asking the differences but
Besides the cam configuration
The main difference is the cost to modify
It will cost you almost double to modifty a 4.6 compared to a 5.0
From
Headers to
Intake manifolds to
Even the supercharges which I have seen for $1500 to
Cams( well in defense they do only have to buy one)

But still the amount of money we put in our 4.6 we could make a very fast 5.0

But i suppose its because the 5.0 has been around for so many decades and the 4.6 since the early 90's

Just a observation

It's possible, since the old OHV 4.0L was German Made also. BTW, those old 2.8's were real slugs. I had one in my '85 Ford Ranger. Kind of a computer controlled carburetor on it, solid noisy mechanical lifters that always needed to be adjusted and a whopping 115hp. The sucker wouldn't run at all in wet weather.

Don't forget about the 2001 Bullitt.

265 hp. Highest rated NA 2v 4.6L besides the Saleens.
