difference in 5.0l motors

i can getmy hands on a wrecked 87 hatch with a 5.0HO and was wondering what the differance is in it compared to the "normal 5.0"
i assume it is a stronger engine, but knowing ford sometimes it might just have a larger tb.
the car also has a posi rear, and short tube headers. with a 5 speed.
and for 200bucks more i can get a intake it is either a cobra or GT40 he wasnt sure but it does have off set runners on it.
i'm new to the 5.0 scene was a GM guy but these foxes are so light, small and fast. i had to make the switch.

The non H.O. motor is different than the H.O. motor. They do share the same lower end and roller cam blocks but the non h.o. motors are fitted with flat tappet(non roller) cams, more restictive heads, cast iron headers, 14lb injectors, and a different firing order. I think although I can't picture it some had the intake reversed and came in on the drivers side vs the passenger side like on the H.O.'s. That's about it that I can remember.

didnt the non ho's have different pistons as well??

Passenger car non-HO's used a cast version ogf the '86 HO's flat top piston with no valve reliefs.

Truck motors use a cast version of the '87-'95 H.O. slug.

BTW, is that an aerialscope I see in your avatar GreenSVT?

No. That's a 2003 Pierce Dash 95' mid mount tower with a 1500gpm pump. It was my last company before retirement, made the move from ladder 1 which was a tiller (driver + person steers from the rear). We looked at an aerialscope and really wanted one mounted on a seagrave chassis at fdny specs but the the price was to high and the city went with the pierce which is a nice piece also.

Nice rig. Must have been hard giving up the tiller though!

I hear you on the price tag of a 'scope though. FDNY spec'd and a pump and you have a million dollar plus truck.

not to jump off topic but I loved being a truckie, was on an engine for most of the begining of my career but loved truck work. this was the first time our department was finally getting a tower and I wanted to be part of it. the tiller was a blast but I was ready for the change and wanted to add the tower to my list achivements+ the tower had more compartments than L1 and did back up rescue and secondary searches and backed up rescue when we where not being used at the calls.

I have an identity crisis.

Being on my hometown volley and a small career Dept, we're expected to do it all. Today could be the engine, tomorrow I'm a truckie. Keeps life interesting.

All I've had expierience with are straight sticks, I'd love to have a crack at a tower, seems like you have more versatility that way. The aerial at my volley hall is due for replacement soon, I'm keeping my fingers crossed, hoping the powers that be seriously consider a tower to replace it.

well we sure did highjack this thread, LOL. I think we answered the ? though.

Best of luck to ya. The tower has it's place but it isn't a do all. That's why we added this company and hired new people, we still staff L1. This is also why the bigger cities have a few towers and more sticks. We have 2 10 story and 2 8 story high rise apartmets plus a few other high rise buidlings. The fatal we had about 9yrs ago and the amount of rescues we made over the stick and ground ladders pushed for the tower + other reasons. The stick still can get into some places better, slip under power lines, etc. they both have thier place. again best of luck to you. pm me any time to share some stories.
