DIN Radio install into 1969

Has anyone installed a DIN size stereo into a 1969 using the aftermarket CD Dash Bezel available from the vendors? I'd like to know how the stereo is supported - is there room for a sleeve, does the bezel hold it up in the front?

I'm sick of my old AM/FM cassete player, I need an upgrade!

Will go with a DIN style in all my cars as funds for stereo's come available.

I don't really like that radio bezel you linked. It doesn't have the clean sharp edge of the factory bezel. And it's missing the chrome, etc..

I cut/bent/riveted some scrap aluminum from a road sign and made my own mount, which I painted black. You can use a strap behind the radio to keep it even more secure. I cut the top half off of the factory deluxe bezel off and joined the two together. You can't even see the fabbed part.

I have the black version of this bezel, and I have to say that it is without a doubt one of the cheapest, most flimsy pieces of crap I've ever purchased.

I had to glue in wood to the bottom portion below the radio to stiffen it up to the point where it would support a radio.

In hindsight, I think that the standard reproduction bezels you can buy for $25 new from any of the Mustang vendors are FAR better!! If I had it to do over, I'd probably get one of those and modify it to work!

There is another bezel made by JME that is pretty nice, and it's carried by Mustangsunlimited, but as you can see from this link, it is wuh-HAYYY overpriced:

No, that does NOT include the radio pictured!!



Maybe someone else makes a reasonably priced single DIN bezel that is worth getting, but I haven't found them yet . . .

I got mine from a different vendor than MU. It was around a hundred bux when I bought it. Mine came with a cage to hold the radio, and has worked fine so far. I want to say I got if from mustangs plus, but I just looked at their page, and they don't show the same one I bought.

DIN Install

I was afraid that that bezel would be a POS. I have a repo or the original that I was thinking of cutting, but I've been hearing some good things about the Retrosound Model One shaft style radio which would fit perfectly. I may go with that.

They also have a line of very low profile speakers that is made with thin Neodymium magnets. I would use a dual voice coil in the dash and two speakers in the doors... I can't find a single comment or review on them - I would hate to be bleeding edge, but at least I know that they would clear...

I have the JME piece and it works great. Highly recommend. Yes, it's pricey but no issues to deal with.

yeah, i would rather pay the big bucks for the JME bezel than pay 100 bucks for that thin flimsy abs plastic POS the other places sell. i just wish that someone would make something more like the original plastic piece with the chrome plating on the raised perimiter and the correct sharp edges rather than the rounded edges of the $100 pieces. i would buy one of those in a heartbeat, but until someone does make something like that i'd rather use the JME bezel.

I'll try take a photo. See the attached photo to see the line where I cut cut the top from the bottom. Cutting it here, keeps the horizontal part that gives a nice surface to attach the aluminum to. I made the upper part from aluminum sheet and joined it to the plastic bottom. I probably used some nuts/bolts. Or maybe I drilled a few holes in the aluminum and epoxy glued it to the plastic. It wasn't too much work. I should add that I have the aluminum wrapping an inch or two on the left and right side of the radio bezel to strengthen it. And I bend little tabs to secure it to the horizontal plastic part. I wish I could quickly draw it on paper and upload.. Oh, I believe the weight of the radio needs to be supported by a strap anyway, so don't expect the bezel to support the radio on its own. My little aluminum contraption surely can't hold the weight of the radio.

as everyone else said, you need a cage and something else to hold it up, some of those radios weigh a ton

ok.. some photos. Not that you can see anything unless I unscrew things. But that is why it works well. Yeah, the car was in drive. I was at a red light.
