Dip stick broke, piece in oil pan Yikes!!

I went to check my oil the other day, I will openly admit it has been a while from the last time I checked it. I pulled out the dipstick and it hung up somewhere in the tube it finally pulled out, it was bent over right at the full line and snapped off so from the cross hatching down is in my oil pan My friend said it should be alright till I change the oil since there is a screen over the oil pickup, He also said we should be able to get that piece out with one of those magnet sticks.What is your guys opinion? My other question is other than a dealership where do you get a new dipstick and possibly the tube it goes in, I think it may be to bent or something. Thanks for any and all input.

stick a big magnet on the bottom of the pan to hold the broken peice in place until you can get it out

Get a flexable one from lokar summit sells them.

Yup, I have about 9 inches of dipstick in my oil pan. It's been in the pan for years.

How do you break a dipstick? Does it hang up on something when you put it back in and you force it? I'm not ragging on you, just kinda curious. I don't want a 9" piece of dipstick in my own oil pan .

See Im not the one who did all the work on the stang(I bought it the way it was minus the tranny and suspension work) so I don't know if who ever did the work bent the dipstick to clear the headers since I don't know it's original location. it may have been fatigued when ever I would put it back in it would stick and I would jiggle it with a slight amount of pressure and it would go in. so I guess I need a diagram of how it is supposed to run to figure if it is jacked up, anybody have one?

Well for me when I had the MAC equal lengths the dipstick could no longer go through the header. I had to bend the housing just so the hood would close. Guess all the bends took a toll on my dipstick.

Interesting. I've always figured the dipstick was made from spring steel and wouldn't break all that easily. Apparently not a safe assumption . I hope mine doesn't break!

Mine broke at the rivots - happened at an oil change place, luckily they fished the piece out before it slide down the tube all the way. Surprisingly, they showed me both sections and bought me a new one from Ford. Had it shipped to my house.

I change my own oil now that I have a garage.

Yup broke my dipstick tip tonight, sucks I'm trying to take the tube out, I think the piece is still in the tube jammed. It's the very tip of the stick. Dropped the oil with no luck and fish around in the pan with a magnet...no luck. Can this 1/4" piece hurt anything?

I wouldn't use a regular magnet. I would use one of the super magnets. Can't remember the name. But I imagine a hobby shop would have it. You need something that will pull it through the sludge and oil and to the bottom.

yeah if you leave it in there i would get one of those strong magnets and stick it to the bottom of your oil pan, that way it sticks to that and wont be moving all around in there

its a good idea to get a magnetic drain plug to.

get a strong as h3ll magnet and take the car for a "spirited" drive around town to make sure you get it to slosh the oil around and hopefully get the piece to stick to the magnet

I have had peices of a cam/dist gear fall into an engine before. (460 dizzy wont fit in a 351w. I'm not stupid, I just thought it was the Windsor one.) I did my best to get the pieces out (and just lived with the ones I didn't.) Never had aproblem with it. Still running great!
