Dist gear pin shearing?? (3 times)????

Ok, I bought this 88' 4cyl from a guy that kept all his reciepts(sp) from the time he bought it. When looking through it, I saw 2 different times it had the gear and pin on the distributer(sp) replaced. I thought, well that's strange. About a year and a half later, this thing is running like crap. I check the gear and sure enough, it's loose, and the pin is smaller in width than the shaft. I went to a local yard and got a new dist, but what's up with that? Happen alot? I'm not to hip on the 2.3 stuff, but seams strange.

Did it have a roll pin in it (hollow in the middle) or something else?

Kinda sounds to me like somebody has possibly been putting the wrong size pin in there or something, I don't really.

Yes it did, but I looked into it more and it looks like they might have drilled it oversize when they replaced it last time. I'm glad I got a different one. Thanks

I have not had this problem, but I have heard that this was a big problem with the marine version of the 2.3 engine. It does need the proper pin in it.
